I am looking fro a scope for my mini 14. I have tried several using the side mount from B Square that is mounted on the side of the receiver with a thumb screw type device. None of these type scope mounts were stable enough to hold zero. I purchased a new mini-scout-mount from amegaranges. It replaces the top barrel gard of the factory gard supplied with the mini14. The scope mounts the the new gard. I think it will be stable enough to mount the scope to and keep zero. The problem is that the scope will have to mount in front of the receiver. That means 10-12 in. of eye relief. A standard scope wont work due to the eye relief problem. I am considering an Aimpoint 2x compmL2 , 30mm red dot or A Bushnell 2x6 elite 3200 hand gun scope. Problem with the Aimpoint is I would like to have at least a 4X scope. I would also like to have an illuminated rectacle. Any suggestions or comments about the scopes I am considering. I will use the scope for Coyotes and small Varments at night with a spot light.

scope,

Your problem is not with scopes. Your problem is with the rifle. The MINI-14 (I am assuming you have the standard, not the ranch rifle) was not designed to take scopes. Because the cartridge cases eject almost vertically, you must mount the scope too high for a good cheek weld. Even when you do mount the scope, the force of the bolt slamming back on the receiver is hard on both the scope and the mounts. I do understand that they an have aftermarket buffer and an adjustable gas block which they say will help the problem. You may wish to try one of these along with locktite. Or you may wish to trade your standard MINI-14 for the ranch model. (In my opinion, even the ranch rifle requires the scope to be mounted too high for a good cheek weld.)

Personally, I wouldn't even consider mounting a scope on any MINI-14 because of the lousy cheek weld. If I mounted any optics on a MINI-14, it would be either an Aimpoint or an EoTech mounted forward on a scout rail.

Even if you had the ranch rifle the scope will still be to high to clear the iron sights (I could not find happiness). Aimtech (i think) makes an outstanding forward scout mount for the AK and the mini. There mount is the best available for AK (I have 2 on 2 different AK) but can't speak for the mini. In any case an Extended eye relief 4x leo should work

Thanks Guys. I have bought the Scout mount. You are correct about the mounting height etc. I took it to a gun smith and they couldn't get the scope to hold steady enough with the after market screw in scope mount that mounts above the receiver. As you know, the Scout mount mounts the scope forward of the receiver. I think either the Aimpoint 2X compML or the orthe Bushnell 2x6 will work ( both have unlimited eye relief ), approximately 10" needed. Since the Aimpoint is only 2X it's use as a scope as opposed to a " sight " is limited ( eyes are not what they used to be ). Also, I am wondering if the Bushnell can stand the recoil since it's made for a hand gun. I am assuming it will since they have been successfully used on .44 Mag, Thompson .308 hand guns etc. Does anyone have any experience with either of these Scopes in this type of application. Thanks for the help.
