I just got a new Ruger m77 hawkeye .270 and was wondering what scope to get. I was leaning towards Vortex or Zeiss, something in the $400-$500 range. It has a black synthetic stock and stainless barrel, so if there are any decent stainless scopes out there, I would take a look at those as well. Thanks.

What will the primary purpose of the gun be? Hunting? What game? What distances do you encounter?

I will be using it for mostly hunting, from coyotes to whitetails. Range of shots up to 450 yds.

Meopta MeoPro 4-12x50 or 3-9x42 would be at tht top of my list. Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 would be right there with the Meopta's. Should be able to get a used 3.5-10x44 Conquest for a little over $400 so look at that too. Leupy VX-3 3.5-10x40 and VX-2 3-9x40 would also be good choices.

3-9 SS. It will work great for hunting And you will have a scope you can use to begin ranging and shot solutions for long range.

Congratulations
On getting such a great rifle! I have the same rifle but in the 6.5 Creedmoor with the 26" barrel. The 270 is a very capable round and the Ruger won't wear out. Tho the barrel may only last 3,000 rounds before it gets a bad throat. If your rings arestill in the factory package you can exchange them for Ruger 30 mm rings. |

I have that exact same rifle, colors and all. I know I am not as knowledgable as most on here but I fitted mine with a Leupold Mark AR Mod 1 3-9x 40mm with the firedot TMR reticle. While the glass probably isn't as good as the Zeiss suggested it serves me well and kills deer at 200 yards just fine (got a great deal on it too) Looks sweet IMO and shoots great. Was shooting sub 1" @ 100 with factory loads last time out. Although I don't have another rifle yet to compare it with a couple of the guys said my gun kicks more than they prefer.....they may just be getting a little old for that caliber though
P.S. those factory Ruger rings work great and I wouldn't change them unless you have to.
