got a new Savage 10FP .308 20" heavy barrel rifle.  Didn't come with bases.  Would like to put a tactical scope on it, to learn the ins and outs of shooting with one.

my budget isn't much, say around $350 for the scope, not including rings and bases.

appreciate any discussion or advice on what would be good on this rifle.  I just shoot paper at the local ranges now... My main range has 50, 100 and 200 yd targets.  Another range I occasionally use goes out to 300 yds.

the rifle is just sitting in my safe, I won't be able to shoot it until I get the bases, rings and scope   Sad

Also, I handload all my own ammo and am having trouble finding .308 brass for it.  I had to "bite the bullet" ha ha, and order 100 Lapua cases from eabco.com.  Found out after I ordered that they are also out of stock.  everyone is out of stock on Win and Lapua .308 brass.  Looks like I picked the wrong caliber for a new rifle !!  Big Grin

thanks for any info on bases, rings, and scopes...!

PS:  I'm sure everyone is going to suggest the SS 10x.  I would prefer a variable, but I am considering the SS.

or

You guessed it the SS10x42

Going with the Nikon will keep you at a 1" tube which will keep the cost down on the rings.

These rings

and these bases

Should put you under your budget and will do just fine.  People have been using plain dovetail rings and bases for a long time on much heavier calibers than your new rifle.  Welcome to OT!!!

Edited to say:  Go to Walmart pick up a couple or boxes of Federal Powershok or Remingotn Core Lokt for 10-15 bucks a piece, shoot them up and bam, you have some decent .308 shell cases to start with.  Just make sure you prep them properly before reloading them.

If you can't find 308 brass (most places I searched list 308 stuff as "out of stock"), you could order 243 or 7-08 brass and resize to 308.  You would also have to trim to length after resizing but this brass is available and a heck of lot cheaper than Lapua. Just my 2 cents.

when I mentioned approx. $350 budget, I was talking just for the scope.  I don't mind paying additional for the rings & bases.

how do you edit your own posts?

I forgot to ask if anyone had a pic of the SS 10x42 on a 20" HB .308 savage.

so how are Leatherwood scopes?  Is "camputer" and "ART" just gimmicks or useful and workable?  Prices seems good.

No Bro, That is my all time favorite cartridge. There is a competitor that starts with "C" that has Lapua .308 for 51 bucks in stock, just had 2 box delivered.  My 700 in .308 has a 10X SS on it and I wouldn't trade it for squat.

OK, I'll trade if for a SN3.  But that's as low as I go.

I would suggest you consider the 10x Super Sniper they have some package deals now where you get some nice accessories like the mildot master and lens caps etc all in a well thought out package.  As for leatherwood stuff avoid it like the plague it is from china.

thanks for the leatherwood tip, I will avoid it...

I will look into the custom vx-II thing.  do you need to get that direct from  Leupold?  or do you buy a normal vx-II then send it to leupold?  can swfa do it?

Look into the fine products from SIGHTRON.  The price is right and the glass is good. Thunbs Up

I have a Savage 10FP too. I used Weaver bases and rings on mine (also fits 1913 Picatiny mounts). I may change to Burris Xtreme rings someday, but so far no complaints.

I'm sure SWFA could place the order for you  ---   one should ask Brady in a PM which way is preferable to get the correct info.  Might have to pay for it up front rather than at shipping - not sure -- ask.

You have to have so many posts for the edit capability. Now for the SS, it would be a very good scope for that particular rifle.

ok, I am leaning towards the SS 10x rear focus.  Since I'm no expert on rings and bases, are Warne Maxima 2-piece bases and Warne Maxima medium rings OK?

http://www.swfa.com/pc-11340-1726-warne-maxima-2-piece-base.aspx

http://www.swfa.com/pc-11421-1750-warne-maxima-quick-detach-30mm-rings.aspx

is medium ok, or would I need high?

I think you will be OK with the Warne medium rings.

That's some very sound advice Wes. I like the speed dials.
