    Posted: March/13/2004 at 13:06
Over the course of the next week I'll be testing the accuracy of my .308 NDM-86 Dragunov out to (hopefully) 900yds w/the PSOP 8x42D scope I currently have (range report will follow). However, should I really get into the 900yd+ shooting I might want something with a bit more magnification for the really long shots. So, seeing as how I'm on something of an *extremely* tight budget after purchasing 3 NDM-86s I'd like to hear suggestions for a decent budget scope w/higher magnification (can be fixed or variable) w/an objective bell no larger than 42mm so it will fit the NDM-86 w/o problem or having to remove the rear sight leaf. TIA!...

Thx! The Tasco SS is already on my short list (but which magnification? 10x, 16x or 20x?) along with the Bushnell 3200 Elite 10x40 mildot.

The 20x is just too difficult to use on any scenario other than a bench in perfect light.  The 16x is a good compromise but the 10x is the best over all choice.  You will need to adjust parallax if you want to shoot to the rifles potential (the Elite has no parallax adjustment).

Thx again! The PSOP 8x42 I have now is adequate for shorter ranges, sounds like the 16x Tasco SS might be my best choice so far.

Chris, what sort of warranty comes w/the Tasco SS and through whom? Thx!...

PS- Could you suggest a decent set of 30mm rings that won't break the bank? Thx!...

All current production SS scopes have a lifetime warranty through Bushnell/Tasco.

If you have a "Weaver" style base the Burris Z rings are nice.

Thx! I appreciate the help. Now all I've gotta do is see how much change I can dig out from the couch cushions...

Chris, if I want to use a standard scope it looks like I'm stuck w/using a 1" tube. Any suggestions for a good 1" scope? (I've been looking for one of the early 1" IOR 2.5-10x42 Tacticals but no luck so far). I'll use the Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40 if needbe but I'd like more options. Thx!...

Either the new Leupold Mark 4 PR series or the Weaver Tactical would be excellent.

The Leupold Mark 4 PR 3-9x40 looks very good albeit stretching the budget a bit! Thx!...
