Greetings,

I am new to the board but have been a regular reader for a while.  I am seeking advice on selecting a new scope for my Remington 700 30-06.  This is my all-around hunting rifle but it is primarily used for whitetail hunting in north Idaho where my shots are typically less than 200 yards and often in low light.  I have budgeted about $800 for a new scope but could spend up to $1000 (with some pain).  I tend to prefer scopes with an objective lens of 42 mm or less for aesthetic and handling reasons.

Based largely on the advice and opinions of contributors to this forum I have narrowed my choices to the following Kahles scopes.

Kahles KX 3x9x42, 4A reticle

Kahles American Hunter 2x7x36 (from sample list), plex reticle

Kahles CL 2x7x36, 4A

I have a couple of specific questions:

(1)  Is there a significant or even noticeable difference in low light performance between a 2x7x36 compared to a 3x9x42 scope?  Specifically, will the larger exit pupil diameter at lowest power and better glass in the Kahles CL 2x7x36 negate the advantage of the larger objective in the Kahles KX?

(2) Since it appears that the primary difference between the Kahles KX and AH is the choice of reticles, is it worth spending an additional $200+ to get the KX with 4A reticle for presumably better low light performance ?   Iíve never used a scope with a 4a reticle so have no basis for comparison.

I am obviously bent on Kahles but no doubt excluded many good choices so would also appreciate other suggestions.

Thank you in advance for thoughts and suggestions.  This forum is a wealth of knowledge.

Best regards,

George

Welcome GPN1!

You have narrowed your choices to some outstanding scopes, any of which you'd be very happy with.  I haven't compared the CL to the KX or AH, so all I can say is if the CL is better as Kahles claims, it must really be superb!

To answer your questions, I haven't noticed any difference in low light performance between a high-quality 2-7X36 and 3-9X42 of the same brand, only the difference in upper magnification.  Both have adequate objective sizes for their power range and both allow for reasonably low mounting height.

To me, the KX wouldn't be worth $200 more just to get a brand new scope, but only you can make that call based on what the new KX with the 4a reticle is worth to you.  In a first focal plane reticle scope, the 4a offers a low light advantage because you can make the thick posts thicker by dialing up the magnification while at the same time not having a 4th post at the top of the FOV to obscure some of the target.  In a second focal plane reticle scope like the KX & AH, I personally don't think it makes any difference whether you get the plex or 4a since the thick posts of both appear to be about the same width and they remain the same apparent size regardless of magnification.

Besides the Kahles, other great choices within your stated $ limit with money left over for mounts would include the Zeiss Conquest, Nikon Monarch, Bushnell Elite 4200, etc.

...But out of all of those, I would still personally choose the Kahles.

the 4a reticle will serve you very well and the KX series is supposed to have the same glass / coatings as the C series.

it's an AWESOME reticle for lowlight.

i think the KX 42mm is the best all around hunting scope listed.

you will be extremely satisfied.

good luck.  let us know what you decide.

and welcome to the OT.

J

Actually, all Kahles scopes and binos have the same AMV coatings.  The CL and C series supposedly have the same optical performance, and the KX & AH are a step below the CL optically per Kahles.  The KX and AH are the same optically, only with a couple different options.
