I am new to posting on the forum, but have been reading a long time. I would like to ask your opinions for a scope I will be putting on a gun I am setting up and would greatly appreciate your input.
The gun: From what I am told it could be called a RECCE style set up: 5.56, 16" medium contour Kreiger, mid gas, 12" rail, collapsable stock, flat top, etc. It is mainly to be used for general shooting, target, 3 gun at local club, and my go to SHTF gun. Shooting from 10-600 yards.
The optic: I would like a good "do it all" optic for the ranges listed above. Illuminated, 1-6x or 1-8x. I would prefer a BDC type reticle. Up in the air for FFP vs SFP. I would like to stay under $1500.

I have been eyeing up the IOR Valdada Trident 1.5-8x, Sightron SIII 1-7x IRMOA, Leupold VX VI 1-6x multigun, Bushnell Elite Tactical 1-6x, SWFA SS 1-6x, and Norden combat scope 1-6x.
Any advise or first hand experience you may have to offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

It sounds like a nice rifle!

Pretty much all of the scopes you listed would work well.

You kinda need to decide whether you want SFP or FFP reticle.  Personally, I like FFP designs for general purpose guns, but opinions vary.

Best 3-gun shooters seem to like SFP scopes with bright illumination and if you are leaning that way, you should take a close look at Vortex Razor HD 1-6x24.

Sightron 1-7x24 is a nice scope, but the reticle needs a little work.

Bushnell 1-6.5x24 is a nice scope, but illumination was not up to par, in my opinion (the upcoming 1-8.5x24 looks a lot better, but is more expensive).

SWFA SS 1-6x24 is not available in quantity yet, but it is probably going to be the best general purpose FFP 1-6x24.  I have not seen the finished version yet, but the prototypes were very promising.

Leupold VX-6 is a very compelling SFP option, but I liked the Razor HD a little more.

The new IOR 1.5-8x26FFP looked like a nice scope when I saw it at SHOT, but I have on other experience with it.

Thank you very much for reply. Would the US Optics 1.5-6x be worth looking at also?
I would love to hear from someone who has had first hand experience with the new IOR 1.5-8x. I understand the earier year IOR's had some issues, but the scopes of late appear to be sound.

The value of USO's product is that it can be tailored to your exact needs.  In terms of build quality, they are usually quite good, but glass is only "ehh."

If you need something peculiar, USO is the way to go; if you don't need custom, I would recommend other options.

I do not have experience with that specific IOR but have lots of experience with other IOR optics. They can be very, very good scopes, and they can be one step up from absolute train wreck.

Be aware that, if there is a problem with your IOR, it will either be replaced with a brand new scope, or it will be shipped back to eastern europe for repair.  IOR can be a great scope, and it can be a nightmare, just be ready for both eventualities.

My mid-range AR wears am SS1-4 and I love it.  1-6X might be a little better, extend my kill radius a bit, but I have yet to have issues with the 1-4 being a limited factor.  I can usually put 4 of 5 on steel at 500 yards with the 1-4X. Beyond that, my mid-range AR is petering out anyway.

The USO is a nice scope, but as RC said, unless you go fully custom there are a lot of compelling options.

Generally, since there are quite a few respectable 1-6x options on the market, I would probably not go for a 1.5-6x24 scope.  On the other hand, USO is made in US and is very rugged, so it has a lot of good things going for it.

With IOR (and Val will hate me for saying it), I would say hold off until a few of those get out into the market. Recent IOR designs are quite good and seem to hold up well.  Still, let a few of them get into the market to make sure there are no early problems.

If you can hold out for a little bit and there are no early issues, go for it.

All great advise and much appreciated. Does anyone have an ETA on the SWFA 1-6x yet? I've been checking with them every week for the last couple months and keep hearing the same thing "any day now".

They are shipping now.  But they are working on back orders from the initial group buy.  So it may be a while if you place a new order.  I doubt even SWFA can give you a perfect time frame.

Thanks again guys, I appreciate all the information.
I'm leaning toward the SWFA 1-6x and adding a Kenton speed turret, but I'm a  little concerned about how long it may take to arrive. I was hoping to get an optic mounted in the next couple weeks.

The IOR is also very tempting. Although RC's advice makes me question thier quality control and makes it sound like it could be taking a big chance on a fairly expensive scope. ILya also seems to have some concerns about quality.

With the Leupold VX VI 1-6x I feel confident about the quality, but I really dont care for the SPR reticle. I wish they offered more reticle options through the custom shop for this scope.

I notice that nobody commented on the Norden?

I have tested an early version of the Norden/GRSC scope and liked it.  That scope is all about the reticle.  If you like the reticle, it is a good option.  I think it is a veyr good reticle if the ammo you are shooting matches it.

For your needs and budget you'd be very hard pressed to find a better option than SWFA's 1-6x FFP. It'll get you out past 500 yards and obviously you can keep it at 1x for quick, close shots. As others have stated they just started shipping the first batch, so it'll be a bit, i'd guess as to when they can catch up with all the back orders.

IF you're willing to spend a bit more than the $1500, my vote would be the Razor HD, 1-6x.

I agree w/ this.  1-4's are really about as practical as it gets for that caliber as far as range and weight.  Sure you can go higher powered but at the cost of added weight.  I went w/ the 1-6x only because it was packaged with the 5-20x for a screaming bargain and it's going on a range toy anyway not a "for real" rifle.
