I currently have a marlin guide gun in 45-70 that has a Leupold M8 2.5x 20mm extend eye relief scope mounted on the barrel. I really like this setup, and the scope appears bright enough in twilight. I have been advised that since I will be using this gun for a upcoming black bear hunt, i need to get the "brightest" scope I can afford. The reasoning behind this advise is that the larger black bears tend to come out later in the day when the light is not as bright.

As I have nothing to compare the "brightness" of my current scope with any other, I am wondering if anyone has experience with my present scope. I did view through the scope this evening about 8:45 PM, and it seemed bright enough for me; don't know how it would look pointed at a black bear. I can mount a scope of the receiver, but again I like the quick acquistion my barrel mounted scope affords me now. Any suggestions?

thanks

i havent ever hunted bear but to me if your comfortable and maybe more importantly confident with your current setup i would tell you to go with it, other wise the only way to figure this out is to hit the local shops and look through some scopes, if its a smaller shop ask them to turn the lights off and look at a dark area in the shop. sounds to me like you feel your current setup is adequate and your friends are putting doubt in your head, go with the gut my friend

Can't compare a scout set with other scope setups. they are "brighter" by nature. I use scout set ups just because they are "brighter" even though they only use a 20mm or so bell. max. exit pupil is already established, and using with both eyes open as well offers advantages not available with traditional scope setups. Also you will not be aiming at a point on the bear, the "quickness" of your entire gun-optics is better. Unless you want to ruin the guns balance and handling characteristics with a "hubble" goforit.
