OK guys... I just bought this rifle and I am having a real time coming up with the "perfect" scope for it! I am looking for something compact for it, to keep it as light as possible. The purpose is strictly hunting, low light, thick woods, hog, deer and black bear, all shots inside 100 yds. and I am trying to keep it as traditional looking as possible. I would like to stay around 300.00 to 350.00 And as always, your opinions and recommendations are highly respected, and very much appreciated!! Thanks Guys!! Tony

i hate to say it, but you may have to buy a leupold
a 2x8 nikon monarch might work well too, you could buy a 2x7 vortex viper as well. Edited by pyro6999 - October/03/2010 at 15:10 |

Might want to consider this. http://swfa.com/Leupold-25x20-FX-II-Ultralight-Riflescope-P3264.aspx Light, compact, can be mounted LOW,hvy plex is EASILY seen in low light ,and is EASILY distinguishable when sighting on a target in thick stuff. |

sorry, that last post sounded a little confusing... should have said I like the nikon's AND the Vortex's and since I have been wanting a viper anyway, will just go that route. |

Thanks Earl! I will look into the Leupold... Just always thought they were a little over priced for the quality, but if you like them, they cant be too bad!

I like ALL scopes! Been thinking about opening a home for wayward scopes even. LOL
I to think Leupolds are a bit overpriced but when it comes to low powered fixed X scopes there's not much out there. Besides, that 2.5x20 is a nice scope By the way you could go the used Leupold route if one ever catches your eye but you don't want to pay the big bucks I picked up a NIB M8 2.5x20 w/hvy plx not long ago for $180 shipped.

Pyro, is the eye relief critical on the viper? Ive heard some say it is and some say it is pretty forgiving..

If the leupold is a bit rich the weaver 1-3 should fit the billl or the Burris 4x20 timberline would probably be Ok too. The little redfield 2-7x33 is very compact too.

at one point in time i considered that ior scope for my .375H&H, but i can see a reason to used a fixed power on a hunting rifle. a target rifle is another story imo.

That IOR seems to be the top of the 4x heap these days. I'm guessing all the 4x32 Conquests are gone, but those were sweeeeet for $299. If you're interested in something a tad more light/compact, the http://swfa.com/Sightron-4x32-SII-Riflescope-P9181.aspx gets really good reviews for both performance, and value. And if you're really staying < 100 yards for shots, you might be able to throw a rimfire scope up there, like either of these: I own 1 of each, and I'm surprised at the view every time I draw on the target. You didn't sound too enthusiastic about Leupold, so I didn't bother to mention the FXII 4X. And I know it's not spending enough of your budget, but Weaver still sells plenty of K4's every year. Good Luck! FC

Really nice post by Follically Challenged above (I could have picked this moniker too:-). I'll add my comments below.
Very nice glass - although I feel the steel tube is 1950s technology.
+1 from reading abt it. I am thinking of picking one too.
Over the past couple of months I carefully compared the ProStaff 4x32 Rimfire with the VXII 3-9x33 EFR, and the Weaver 2.5-7x28 Rimfire. The little $175 Weaver is really nice size-wise: it seems to fit very nicely on a small rimfire rifle. But, optically, it is significantly worse than the ProStaff 4x32, which acts much better than its price. Conversely, the $100 ProStaff 4x32 does not match the optical quality of the $400 Leupold. As everything is a matter of compromises, I ended up keeping the Weaver for its mag flexibility and the 3x9 Leupold. But, to add something to the fire, I also picked up a Kahles 2-7x36 CL with adjustable objective. It goes for $500 and is a class above any of the other scopes. If you have the $$ I would strongly recommend it as the ultimate tweener in the <=$500 range, while there are some still left at that price. As the line has been obsoleted, it is a once in a lifetime opportunity... |
