Hi,

I discovered this forum while researching and learning about rifle scopes.

My father in law is giving me his Springfield 1903 rifle that he had "sporterized" in the past. This will be my first rifle. And I would like to get started with target shooting at our local gun club where we have a 600 yard range. They do various practices for targets on paper. As well as silhouette on steel chickens pigs and other forms from 100 to 600 yards. I have no intention to go hunting...

As a photographer I value good lenses and know that prime lenses are better than zoom etc.

The range is up in the mountains and can be very windy and hot and the mirage can be pretty bad after 11AM.

What kind of scope should I get for this rifle?
  • Fixed 6x , 8x, 10x, 12x, 16x ?
  • Zoom if so what range?
I already created a wish list but will bother you with that once I know what kind of scope I should go for.

Next year I plan to buy an accurate bolt action rifle and might need an other scope for that.

Looking forward to your replies,

Roger

Welcome to Optics Talk.

Do you have a MAX $$$ figure in mind? This will help The Collective to better help you select a scope.

A sporterized 1903 Springfield .30-06 was the first high powered rifle I ever shot.

Working with $2K will likely net you some quality stuff. I would assume Ila Koshkin, RifleDude  etal will soon chime in with suggestions. I defer to the masters! BTW, welcome to the OT Forums.

Do you anticipate using the rifle for hunting? Ever?

In the fixed power scopes I am thinking off:

These isn't much choice for fixed power scopes out there. Any other suggestions?

With that budget, I wouldn't limit myself to a fixed power. A SS 5-20x would be nice.
