I have a new Kimber 84M Varminter in .204 Ruger for general small varmints/plinking/etc. and am trying to decide on the best scope ($300 price range).  I will shoot prairie dogs, etc.  This gun will be a carry gun with ocassional bi-pod/bench use.  I am looking at the Nikon Buckmaster in 4.5x14x40 w/bdc or 6x18x40 w/bdc and the Burris Fullfield II 4.5x14x42 balistic plex with the spotting scope package (pretty good deal).  With the Burris I will need to go with high rings and probably low with the Nikon.

Anybody out there with this gun?  What would you recomend?

I am new to rifles but have done a lot of research.  This site is excellent!

Welcome to OT and Congratulations on your Kimber.  I have several model 84s, none in the varmint style right now.  I did have pro varmint 22-250 for a while with the Burris you mentioned on it.  Nice scope, especially for the money.  I'm almost positive I used medium rings.  I have an 84 Classic now with a Leupold 6X42 in low rings.  Thats a smaller taper barrel, so medium should be good.

You've got a very fine rifle there, get the best scope you can afford.

Thanks for the reply mwyates.  I bought the FFII in 4.5x14x42 and mounted the Signature medium rings that were sent by SWFA and the scope touches the barrel.  I am not thrilled and obviously it will not work.  I looked at the Burris fit guide and it will take high rings.  I am now considering sending it back and getting the Nikon because it has the side focus and the BDC is nice but more importantly will sit lower on the gun.  Not sure though.
