Been quite a while since I posted here, so I'll to the best I can. Like others I m lost in the confusing marketing mess of rifle scopes we have currently today. I spoke with a local 1000 varmint bench rest shooter and asked for his help as well. He shared his opinions and also sympathized with me over the disgusting array of useless optics on the market.

I have built a semi custom left hand rem 700 in 308 win. The action and barrel are factory, but have been tuned and made square. Its stocked in an HS Precision psv069 stock and it also has HS matching bottom metal. It also has a new trigger. I plan on getting it going as a 308 for the time being. When I find the funds for a new barrel it will be re chambered to a 6mm, 6.5 or 7mm of some short action flavor or god forbid a 338 federal lol.

My intent for this rifle is two fold. 1st it will be in the truck ready for action on the local varmint population, rock pile and deer. I work in Agriculture so I often have the opportunity to help out with critters. I plan on using it for hunting quite a bit via day hikes into the woods and also on my trips. The largest critter I ever anticipate using this rifle for would be an elk someday who knows. Whitetail, Antelope, Mulies, Black bears and varmint are my primary go afters these days.

2nd I plan to use this rifle to enter in the NRA High Power Rile Silhouette shoots near my home.  Even if my rifle goes over weight I will still plan on shooting just not for score, but I m hopping to squeak this thing in at 10 lbs 2 oz. on the nose.

So there you have it. Hunting and shooting out to 500 or 600 yards tops. Obviously the scope has to rugged and it also has to be light. I m not planning on shooting much past 500 or 600 yards I have given up on that pipe dream. Most I would do is shoot mid range f-class out to 600. I have no interest in the 1000 yard competition at this point in my life. Just a good practice on steel and hunting.

My budget is under $600 if possible I may go higher to get what I want, but not planning to. Currently I have been leaning towards a Leupold FX 3 6x42 upgraded to CDS or something like a 3.5x10x40 cds not really sure I need the paralax adj, if the magnification is low and staying under 600? who knows I sure don't.

Not on board with the Vortex crowd. I have sent to vipers back on an 4x16x44 HS and the same one only in the LR version. I wasn't impressed and felt my leupold 2.5x8x36 was better. Just me though.

Thank You

Bob

You won't like this, but you should take a look at Vortex Razor HD LH even though it is a bit over your budget.

Outside of that, Meopta Meostar 3.5-10x44 should be right up your alley.

Hey thanks koshkin for the quick reply. Could I get your thoughts on the SWFA 3x9x42 HD for my purposes ?

I m sure the Razor is awesome as it's seems the only Vortex most often recommended, but sadly it just aint int the cards for the dollars available.

SS 3-9x42 will work very well. I have two of them and I am extremely happy with Howe they have held up. They are are a touch heavier than HD LH, but really good scopes for the money.

Both are pretty old designs, so old info would be current. The Lueppy will have a touch better glass, but the SS will turrets that match the reticle. The SS is available in either MIL or MOA models.
