I'm trying to decide between a Leupold VX-R 4-12 and a Burris Veracity 2-10, either of which can be purchased for about $500, for my Steyr Pro Hunter .280 Remington.  Both have the desired 30mm scope tube with advantages going to the Veracity for side focus and ffp and to the Leupold for weight and illumination.  The rifle is primarily for play with Cerakoted metal and hydrodipped stock.  Loads were developed using my 3-15 Weaver tactical borrowed from another rifle and it has been used for shooting paper to 400 yards and steel to 1100. If I hunt in WY again it would be my rifle of choice.  I don't need or desire large  tactical style turrets for this rifle.  My questions are:

1. Has anyone done a side by side comparison of the optical quality of these two scopes and if so what are the pros and cons?

2. As far as Leupold's optical quality goes are the glass and coatings in the VX-R in the VX-2 or VX-3 category?

3. Same for the Veracity, is the glass closer to XTR II, Extreme or FF II scopes?

4. Any other 30mm scopes in the $500 price range (ffp or sfp) I should consider?

Leupold would tell you there is little difference in the optical quality between VX-R and VX-3. I think they might be right. If 10x would do, I'd much rather have 2x than 4x on a general purpose rifle.

Vxr and vx2 are the same optical system. Vx3 is slightly better. But the illumination system in the vxr is excellent

I have not had good luck with Burris but know several guys who love their products. I would rather pick a used Zeiss off of samplelist for a hunting type scope, particularly the rapid z models.

As for the Burris Veracity what I like about it is the reticle and the fact it starts at 2x but I wont buy one.  One of my favorite scopes is a 1-4 Trijicon illuminated red post reticle its fast and deadly and 30 mm

If you absolutely have to go 30 mm tube instead of a 1 in hunting scope I would first look at the SS

Thanks everyone for the input.  Initial shooting to assess the accuracy potential with old reloads I had on hand was done with my SS 3-9x which has really excellent glass.  Unfortunately, the outer edge of the occular lense on that model is sharp and I got bit a couple times so it is now on my Sig 716 where that isn't an issue.

My 30mm rings and rail are finished in Cerakote to match the barreled action so I want to stay with a 30mm tube.  The price penalty for going 30mm with Zeiss puts it out of my budget and a couple Bushnell scopes I've owned in the past didn't work out for my eyes.  I just noticed that Leupold is doing some year end rebates with free shipping so I will hold off a bit to see what comes up for Black Friday and the holidays and keep watching The Sample List.

Yes, that one keeps popping back into my mind.  I like the glass and features on my Weaver 3-15 Tactical so the down sized 2-10 x 36 has appeal for my Steyr.  The lock down open turrets are workable for a carry rifle so I think I will look at that one again.  Thanks for the reminder.

At $599.95 the 4-16HS Viper sounds like a good fit for you.  I've had two Viper scopes and liked them.  The 4 inches of eye relief should work for you, and it''s a 30mm tube.  The big win with Vortex though is their No Fault Warranty.

I've looked at that scope side by with a SWFA SS 3-15 and Weaver 3-15 Tactical scope on paper out to 400 yards.  To my eyes it does not hold up optically to those scopes beyond 10x.
