I just picked up my first AR style rifle. It is a Bushmaster Predator and has a 20" fluted barrell, with a 1/8 twist rate. I am looking for a good scope to finish off the system. It seems you all know a lot more about scopes then I do. So far I have narrowed the field down to:
Leupold VX III 4.5-14x50mm LR (30mm tube)
and
Bushnell Elite 6500 2.5-16x42 or 50mm (30mm tube)
Initially I am leaning toward the 6500 because it seems more versatile. I plan on using the gun mostly at the range for fun (see how accurate I can get my loads) but I also want to be able to go varmint/predator/maybe deer hunting in Montana. I am open to any ideas you knowledgable people may have even if they are not the two above. Also I have a big dilemma about the size of the objective lens... should I go 40 (42 on Bushnell) or 50mm? Does it make a huge difference?
Finally, I know this is a lot but feel free to answer any portion, is a Sunshade necessary? Does it narrow the field-of-view?
Appreciate the help!

I have both size objectives. The 42s are easier to move further back for eye relief adjustment, given the same size tube (for me anyways).

To answer your other questions, I have not seen the need for a sunshade at the tange or in the field. Field of view will be determined by the manufacturer on the specs of the scope. You'll find that some are similar and some vary a bit. Hope this helps. |

From what you are saying I think you would really like the Sightron SIII. A 3.5-10 is quite useable for hunting and the glass and tracking of the target knobs on this scope are reported to be top notch. The glass will be better than either of the ones you mentioned and I have always been a Leupold guy and I have a Bushnell 4200 4-16x40 on an AR. I will suggest that .223 is not the correct rifle for hunting anything in Montana as there are still Grizzley Bears in Montana. I was born in Montana and I can remember stories of people with guns less powerful than 30-06 being killed by bears because they failed to follow rule #1 Use Enough Gun.
http://www.samplelist.com/ The Bushnell 6500 is also a nice scope you are in a group of scopes where you virtually cant go wrong they are all good choices. Edited by Urimaginaryfrnd - March/13/2009 at 02:19 |

Thanks you Urimaginaryfrnd... I hear that about Montana. When I go for coyotes and varmints I would be going to the Breaks where there are no Grizz. I take the .300 wsm for Elk in Grizz country.
I will look into the Sightron.
