I'm trying to get a birthday gift for my husband. He has a bushmaster AR-15 Varminter .223. I've looked all over the internet, and confused as ever. Sad I don't know what to look for, or which brand is better. All I know is he wants something that has 500 yards accuracy. My budget is around $500-600. Please help me. What criteria should I consider? Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you very much,
Niki

P.S. I'm new here. Forgive me if I posted it at the wrong spot.

I use this scope on my AR. (Mine is an older version, but virtually the same.)

He will also need a mount, I assume?

I have this setup on my AR and love it.

Hang around here for a spell and get some other ideas. The gang will be back tomorrow and can give you some other suggestions, as well.

Not sure why those links aren't hot. Sorry about that.

Thank you very much! I think he'd probably prefer a variable scope. I'm looking at 4.5-14x50 scopes. But I'm not sure if this would be ideal for a 500 yrd range. I'm willing to stretch my budget a little bit if needed. Anyway, thank you very much for your suggestions. Will see what others suggest also. Take care, Niki.

Since you mentioned a 4.5-14x50 I am guessing that is something he has talked about. So you know about what he would like. I would look strongly at the Zeiss 4.5-14x44 conquest off the sample list. It is $600 with a list price of $830 and is a factory refurbished from Zeiss with a Lifetime transferable warranty. I have not seen a factory refurbished scope from Zeiss, but from what I have read it is hard to tell the difference between one and a new one. This one has a mil dot reticle.

And if he would prefer a normal reticle

There are two ways to accurately shoot long range.  1. a reticle with hold over marks like this:
SPL16847Zeiss 4.5-14x50 Conquest Rifle Scope DEMO-B
$649.95
The Zeiss  Conquest is a very solid choice and the Rapid Z 800 reticle would make it useable at long distances by using hold over marks.

The other way is to use tactical knobs to dial in correction to compensate for the trajectory of the bullet which drops as it gets farther from the barrel .

I also like some of the scopes that are a bit more expensive and I will show you a couple that I own which I like very much. I also own both of the ones I posted above as well.   The Super Sniper scopes have a lot more adjustment than most other brands.  For a mount I would use either Bobro or La Rue mounts that are slightly forward. Of these scopes all are 30 mm  tube except the Zeiss which is a 1 inch tube. Of the scopes mentioned my first choice would be one of the 5-20 preferably the SS but in the lower price range I would probably pick the Zeiss because there is a lot of difference between 9x and 14x on the top end.

What a lucky man...

Might I suggest another type of scope.

I believe the one on the sample list would be superb. Also another one to look at is this.

http://swfa.com/Zeiss-45-14x44-Conquest-Rifle-Scope-P8672.aspx

This scope has a $100 rebate.

Another scope that might be worth a look even though it is less money is the

http://info.sightron.com/Riflescopes/SII-Series---Big-Sky/SIIB41642HHR/

Sold on SWFA as well.

Also has $100 rebate right now.

This is not as well known as the Zeiss but has very similar performance.

The best thing my wife every did was give me a Visa gift card for a scope and I purchased it myself.
