Is an AR-15 any harder on a scope than a bolt-action deer rifle?
Are there any characteristics, such as eye relief, to watch for when picking a scope for an AR?

normally less recoil because of the  buffer.  Nothing particluar to look for.  I would get a good mount like the Burris PEPR and a variable Super Sniper

Assuming you have a Flattop upper, you'll probably want extra-high or ultra-high rings to be able to see through a scope, because the comb of the stock on an AR15 is very high in relation to the bore, compared to most conventional bolts, levers, pumps, etc. It keeps your head up there pretty high...

The Burris PEPR mount mentioned by SVT Tac fits the bill well, as do some others. I have Badger Ultra-Highs on mine and they are just right for me. Eye relief is fairly flexible because of the fairly large number of cross-slots in a Flattop upper receiver.

I personally don't recommend even trying to mount a scope on a carry-handle receiver, although there are a few mounts out there designed to do so. (Sort of...).

most people need a mount that puts them forward and use mount that puts the center of the scope 1.5" above the flatop and forward
American Defense, Larue, Wilson Combat, etc.. all make top notch mounts that can be removed and replaced with no loss of zero
