I'm thinking about buying a SA M1A super or national match rifle. Planning to use either the ARMS or the Smith mount.

My budget is under $1200 for a scope

I want a scope that will be good at close to medium ranges. Say 50 to 300 yards. Ideally the power will be less then 15.

I've looked at the IOR scopes, ACOGS, Mark IV MR's, and Burris.

Any recommandations?

What does the army use?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but this is the WRONG system to place a scope on. Even a custom built M1a  that is glass bedded - best possible accuracy is about 1MOA and that will degrade over time to what most of these guns are 2MOA guns. You can use the search feature here to see other info I have posted including photos of scoped M1a rifles.  Now for the good news: Go to GAPrecision http://www.gaprecision.net/content/ar10.php and have them build you an AR10.

As for the scope I have Leupold Mark 4 scopes both M1 and M3 styles and for a battle rifle M3 for a target gun M1 as for power range I really like the 4.5-14 range. Having said that you can get by with a 10x Super Sniper for $299. to $399 and I find the ones I have to be surprisingly good considering the reasonable cost. As for glass the European companies have great glass. As for Service Leupold has the best service. As for the best scope available that would be a U.S. Optics SN3 with EREK.  My recomendation obviously is put your money in the custom AR-10 and put a Super Sniper 10x on it and be happy with your 1/2 inch 300 yd groups.

For $1200 you will get a fantastic scope. You will not need to compromise.

I personally like IOR. Great glass. Etched reticles.

Do you want a variable of fixed magnification?

I assume this is target rather than hunting?

The IOR 2.5-10x42 costs about $800 with an illuminated reticle - about $100 less with an ordinary reticle.

Get quality rings - Badger for instance - and a quality mount - Sadlak, ARMS, Smith etc.

Run, don't walk, to www.m-14forum.com and do some research there. They are the real experts on this
wonderful rifle.

John.

Well I live in the Pepul's Repubklik of Kalifornia so an AR-10 is out of the question.

For an auto loader I think the m1a is what i'm stuck with...

Then send it to GAPrecision and have them make it all it can be. By the way GAPrecision and Badger Ordnance are one and the same. I didn't know that until I walked in the door and exclaimed "I dont think I've ever seen that many Badger rings all in one place!" At that point they shed some light on why.
