As my name suggests, I'm new at using a .22. In fact, my only .22 rifle is an air gun (Gammo Whisper) that I just bought for pest control. I quickly realized after 12-15 shots I'm way out of zero with their $10 scope.

Luckily, I read to never put a regular scope on an air gun or my $650 Monarch Gold 3-9x used for my .223 and 6.8 SPC would be ruined. I have that on a LaRue quick detach.

I'll be getting a CZ 452, or 455, this year and our club has a monthly plinking contest at 50 yds. That will be an occasional event as my primarily I shoot bullseye and benchrest. So the very most I am looking to spend on a scope is $150, but $100 would be more acceptable if it gets the job done for both.

Here's my question: What can I buy that I can mount on BOTH my Gammo .22 air gun and a CZ .22? The varmint control will be mostly at about 25 yds and hopefully infrequent, which means 1-2 a week and a few shots. It must be done else my attic wires are going to continue to be gnawed on. 4 or 10 of us on the block have this problem.  Also, for shooting .22 rimfire competition, what do most good shooters buy with regards to the higher scope power in a variable scope? I don't know if 3x10 is more than adequate, or if I should go up to 18 or even 24 power.

Thanks in advance

For your first question:
You will want something that will adjust focus down to short distances, and withstand the reverse recoil of your air rifle.  A lot of scopes will do the former, but few will do the latter.  The Leapers 3-9x32 will stand up to a BSA Lightning, so it will most likely stand up to a Gamo too.  It will parallax down to 10 yards IIRC.  You might get by with a two-piece mount, but I firmly believe that any piston rifle should be using a one-piece scope mount w/stop pin.

Hawke scopes are designed to stand up to piston guns, but I've not used one myself.  They are more expensive than the Leapers air rifle scopes.  The Bushnell 4200 series scopes will also stand up to a piston rifle, and the more expensive Leupolds will too.  These are most likely more money than you will want to spend.  There are three or four websites that are devoted to airguns and their accessories, and you can find more suggestions there.

2nd question:
You mentioned .22 competition, but did not mention which .22 competition.  I've seen people use fixed-powers from 24x to 32x, and variables to that level and higher.  It depends on what type of competiton you want to do.  If you are doing silhouette, then I doubt that you could make use of anything higher than about 30 or 32x.  If you want to cover most bases with one scope, you could get something that goes up to 32x such a the excellent Bushnell 4200 Elite 8-32x40, or go up to 50x with a Sightron SIII 10-50x60.  If you want a fixed-power scope, you can look at (or through, preferably) the Weavers and the excellent Leupolds.  Again, it all depends on what type of competition you want to do.....

I would take a look at the Hawke line of scopes. Mine stands up just fine to the double recoil of a magnum springer and they are advertised as airgun/.22 rimfire scopes. So according to Hawke, it should be able to do both.

You and Phil are right about not putting a centerfire riflescope on a spring piston airgun, it will be ruined due to the double recoil of the airgun.

You may want to look at gatewaytoairguns.org it is a very good website devoted to everything about airguns.

Weaver's rimfire scopes are airgun rated but I'm not an airgun guy and haven't tried them on airguns. I'd avoid swapping scopes around and get a really good rimfire or centerfire scope for that CZ. If you want to be competitive and take advantage of the CZ's accuracy then I'd put a Weaver V16 or better yet a V24 on that CZ. CZ's long bolt throw and resulting high mounting requirement eliminates any advantage to putting a smaller scope on the rifle.

I had a Weaver T24 target scope on my CZ453 and some serious benchrest competitors run T36s.
