I would like to keep the gun lite if you know what I mean. Also the rings, I don't know how good they are, but they are light. I think they will accomodate a 42 mm scope. I put Warne rings on the rifle, but they are just too heavy. I have about a $500 budget. Whitetail hunting in NC.

For your budget Zeiss Conquest with Talley lightweights would be a tough combo to beat.

Whitetail?  300 WSM?  Think you might have too much gun?  I just bought a Tikka T3 Lite stainless in 300 win mag for Alaskan hunting.  And damn does that thing hurt to shoot.

Whatever you get, invest in good rings!  The ones on the wep are pure crap, and you will need something that can withstand substantial recoil.

I just put a nikon Monarch on mine and am not entirely happy with it.  Spend the extra few $$ and get the Zeiss or the Kahles or equivalent.

It's a great gun, far more accurate and enjoyable with great optics.

I really wanted a 270WSM, but the gun store didn't have one. They had this 300WSM at a discount and I've always wanted a 300 mag. anyway. 300's and 7mm mags are the norm in this area. We have guys shooting whitetails with 338s around here.

338 at a whitetail is a bit much IMO. but a dead deer is a dead deer, i guess.

good choice w/ the 300wsm - it will be a good all around gun.  DEFINETELY don't overlook mounts. spend some money there.

i would recommend the newer kahles line and some leupold mounts. or maybe the conquest if you want to save a hundred.

#4 reticle is great for lowlight and tracking.

sorry, didn't see your budget before - i would recommend the conquest, or the monarch UCC. both are great, rugged scopes.

elite 4200 if the eye relief is enough for you.

I have a Tikka 300WSM in S/SS and have a Burris FFII on it.

The scope has done everything I could ask.

The rifle does have some, um, recoil.

So far, the factory rings have done their job.

Get an SVL Limbsaver recoil pad.

Or shoulder surgery.

The rifle shoots good with factory ammo.

Shoots great with Barnes TSX 180gr and IMR 4831.

YMMV.
