O.K. guys, A friend of of mine (who doesn't hunt) has a 13 yr old son that wants to get into hunting(deer and elk).  His dad is fine with the idea, but when talking to him he wants to keep costs down to as cheap as possible to start with in case his son decides he doesn't like it.  for a rifle I recommended he should look at a mossberg 100 ATR, or a Stevens model 200. (IMHO about the best deals going for cheap rifles that are capable of taking deer and elk )

Now on to the real question, what scope?  Most shots will be around the 100yd mark or less I imagine.  I get the impression that he only wants to spend about $75 on one.  I tried explaining that its better to buy the most expensive scope you can possibly afford, but he is pretty set in his ideas.  I know the basic question of "whats the best cheapest scope I can get" has been beat into the ground.  But I would like to make a good recommendation of something near that price range.  I don't want to turn a potential new sportsman away from the game because his equipment lets him down at a critical time.  I know there are no guarantees that any scope might have a malfunction, but I would like to stay away from scopes with known problems. Used scope recommendations are fine too. I looked over the sample list and the only thing that I thought might be decent deal (in the price range) was a bushnell trophy 3-9, grade C, but its sold.

So if you wouldn't mind lets hear the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Thanks

I had a tasco world class on a 30-06 that NEVER let me down! It was stolen from my home and the darn thief is proly still using it!

Mine was a 3-9x40 but I would get the 3-9x50 and would bet its not a bad low light scope.

Good luck and let us know

I'd say a low end Bushnell aswell... The Bushnell 3-9 that came on my Savage Axis 243 suprisingly is holding its zero well and was not hard to zero.

I would love to say buy him a Tikka and put a 6x42 Leupold FX3 long range duplex on it because that would last him the rest of his life.  For not too much money I like these:

Tell him to watch the sample list and pickup a bargain on something like a weaver K model or maybe a prostaff or sightron demo. I have a stevens 200 and I recently purchased a very clean monarch 4x40 ucc off the list for a little over $100. It makes a nice outfit that I would gladly hunt anywhere with.

This appears to be one of the older whitetail classics, a call to SWFA could confirm,

if it is it would be a good fit.

BTW one thing you might want to tell the guy that if his son wants to hunt and all how would he feel if the deer of a lifetime walked out while his kid was hunting and the kid missed and they found out that the cheap scope he buoght was to blame?   just something to think about.

I would not be afraid to take a tasco world class or bushnell banner hunting in the whitetail woods. I have seen both of these scope hold up to serious recoil.(180grain 30-06 on a wood stock) They do lack in weather resistance but if the right steps are taken you can avoid this being an issue. The glass in both compares with what was considered high end optics years ago. My dad has an old redfield fixed 4x that he paid high dollar for 20+ years ago and my old tasco blew it out of the water in clarity. I love top of the line optics just as much as anyone but dont think we should turn hunting into a rich mans sport. This guy has reliable options in his price range.
Just my 2cents

Make sure to teach him about correct eye relief... I've seen kids choke up on a scope because they don't know proper techniques. That could turn them away from hunting/shooting.
