After reading a post by Chris from SWFA about military shooters using .22lr's to practice long range shooting to 200-300 yards I know I have to try this, especially as the gun club I just joined has a 200 yard any rifle/any sight .22lr shoot a couple of times a year.

Per Chris's post, a scope with a lot of internal travel is needed to do this, so I'm looking for suggestions. I don't really want a fixed power, as I'd like to use this rig at all ranges just as the military shooters were, to practice for a day when I hopefully will be able to achieve my dream of having a real long range CF tactical precision rifle.

I want to get a highest quality scope available, but can't get ridiculous about the price. It has to be under $1000,  preferably no more than $700 or so though I'd prefer to spend less. I would also prefer the scope be one that would be useable on a CF rifle if I so chose in the future, and if it could spot .22 cal holes @ at least 100 yds that would be a huge plus. If it could spot them @ 200 yards that would be even better, but I don't know if that is a realistic possibility.

I was wondering if the Bushnell elite 4200 30mm 6-24x50 with mildot reticule might work in this application?

You will most likely need a 20MOA rail or Burris signature rings with inserts.

A Super Sniper 10X wouldn't require either one. That's what I use.

You should be able to see the bullet holes with a 24x scope. I can't see them with a 10X and use a spotting scope. With a 20 MOA rail or ring inserts, from what I have read on the net, you should get to 200 yards but not much farther.

That's why I went with a SS, for the elevation adjustment range, price and repeatability. It should get to 350 or even 400 yards according to my ballistics program. Getting on close target may or may not be a problem for you, but not for me. I use 10, 12 or 15X all the time so I am used to it.

With a 50 yard zero, 70 degrees, 800 ft elevation, my program says 236" for Federal 510 HV 40 gr bullets.

If your going to shoot at long range with a 22LR you will want to use subsonic ammunition.  I know that sounds funny but it will be much more accurate, especially in the wind.  You will however need more elevation due to the extra drop associated with the slower ammunition.  Since you want to use the scope at various ranges you will want as much elevation adjustment as you can get.  A bullet traveling at 1065 fps will drop about 53" at 200 yards with a 50 yard zero (assuming you are using a scope mounted 1.5" above the centerline of the barrel).  This means you will want a scope/rail/insert with at least 27 MOA of adjustment (more would be better).  If you want to go out to 300 yards, you will see about 150" of drop and will need at least 50 MOA of compensation in your scope, rail and/or inserts (again more would be better).

The Bushnell you mentioned has 50 MOA of adjustment (≈ $575)
A Leupold VX-III 6.5-20x40AO has 90 MOA of adjustment (≈ $600)

Hope this helps,
RG
