I am purchasing a 700 SPS Tactical in .308. I'm wanting to put a nice mil-dot on it, but the problem is I need to keep the scope cost around $400. I want a variable powered scope to use for a variety of ranges.

The choices I have found so far are:

Nikon Monarch 2.5-10x42

Nikon Monarch 4-16x42

Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x40

Vortex 6.5-20x44 Viper 30mm

Sightron 4-16x42 SII

Any advice on these choices would be greatly appreciated. I'm also willing to look at any other suggestions.

Thanks

You'd be leaps and bounds ahead if you could save another $100 and pick up one of these off the SampleList

The SS 3-9 rode my SPS tactical for a long time with no issues at all.  Never underglassed never under magnified.  And you won't find tougher!

I would go with either vortex viper or nikon buckmaster for a hunting rig. If your gonna use as a target rig give the super sniper 16x some thought.... Good luck! These are great rifles. If you reload give 168 gr Amax with 45.5 grns of varget a try 2.85 col. It shoots 1/2" in my rifle all day

Out of that list, my money goes to the Vortex 6.5 x 20 x 44.  I have one on a Savage .223 and I have been nothing but impressed with it.  I had it out tonight looking at a 40MPH sign measured at 9/10ths of a mile (by odometer) and I was absolutely amazed.  Best value in that price range, for me anyways.  That scope is the gold standard of variables as far as I am concerned.  I think you will be happy with it.  Of course, I also have a SS, so I am partial to those as well!  You won't regret either of them.

My wants and budget dont alway line up either so I will suggest this scope and I have one that I like a lot because a 6x42 is a very bright scope and a power range that can be easily hand held where higher powers will have to be shot from a solid rest.

I loved my 6.5x20x44 Viper.  I did, however, sell it for the SS 5-20.  To Vortex's credit, I received almost the purchase price for it (1.5 years-old)!  I had 11-1200 yard hits no problem with it.  In the mid-range scopes, I always recommend this one, especially when compared to the Monarch's.
