Greetings
Finally worked up the courage to just ask for help on choosing a scope, started off with a list of about 150 scopes while trying to do my homework and things just got messy from there with the fires and the demons from hell and the math The rig My rifle is a Brno ZKK-600 series 7x64. At the moment I have a magnificent(!) Tasco 4-16x50 on it zeroed at 100m, it holds zero but the lenses aren't that impressive, only about half of the lens is clear at 16x magnification and the rest is just blur and glare. I also can't change the magnification without re-zeroing the rifle. What it's used for It is used mainly to shoot deer at 50 to 200 meters in open country, geese usually between 150 and 300 meters in similar environment, and ofc punching paper up to 500m for fun. What I need #1 - Lens quality, the weather can go from sunny to mental in just a few hours so if it was nice to look through in any sort of light conditions it would be great. #2 - Craftsmanship of course, noone wants their sh*t to break down with that one deer in sight :P #3 - Variable magnification, for reindeer 4x magnification is good and I never go over 6x, while i've been using up to 16x for geese at longer ranges, I am still not convinced I need 16x for 200-300 meters. #4 - I would prefer a 30mm tube since I have rings that fit the rifle and those were a bitch to find and have sent to this part of the world. #5 - FFP? Completely not sure on this one since I've never even seen a scope with it, but someone mentioned it made ranging while changing magnification easier, I assume that applies to ranging crosshairs like mil-dot and that neatly leads me to my next point, the stuff I don't need. #999 - It doesn't have to have anything fancy like light in the crosshair or sunshade or tactical stuff like mil-dot although I'd probably use it if it did. Just having crosshairs with some sort of hashmarks for holdover would be nice. I set the budget at about $500. My list ended up having these scopes... * http://swfa.com/Vortex-4-16x50-Viper-HS-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P48283.aspx or the 44mm version of it, this one looks very good but the 3.1 inch eye relief worried me, most other scopes seem to have 4 inches. * http://swfa.com/Hawke-4-16x50-Sidewinder-30mm-Riflescope-P41101.aspx but I think it was Ilya that mentioned that they were fairly new so it wasn't known how well they'd last. * http://swfa.com/Millett-4-16x50-TRS-1-Tactical-30mm-Riflescope-P8812.aspx this one had all the bling bling I said I didn't need :) ...but choosing was hard after that since I canðt look through any of those scopes, or any scopes at all other than a few Bushnells and Nightforces. So thank you all for your time and all suggestions are welcome. I probably missed some perfectly good ones while making and then weeding out from the list. |

the vortex is the only one of the three you listed I'd consider. the other two do not have the reputation or customer services experince to back them up

Really appreciate that, gonna remove those two from the list.
Someone pointed out http://swfa.com/Weaver-3-15x50-Tactical-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P40578.aspx and the Weaver Super Slam Euro Style series like http://swfa.com/Weaver-4-20x50-Super-Slam-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P40573.aspx Can you imagine how much of an improvement they would be over the Vortex considering the extra cost? Or are there better scopes than that in the $700 area? |

Not sure what the import restrictions and /or taxes are in Iceland so I can't be sure what your cost would be but I would suggest that you check out the Burris fullfield line. It is available in both 30mm and 1" tube and I have had both the 3-9x40 and the 4.5-14x40 and found both to be very nice though the 4.5-14 was pretty heavy for my taste. I believe if you are moving from a Tasco to one of these you will think you have died and gone to heaven plus they are pretty reasonable $$.

Thanks for the tips on Minox and Burris.
As far as I can tell there are no import restrictions but a rule of thumb is that the price doubles when importing scopes. Found a shop here that has a Minox ZA 5 3-15x42 (doesn't say what reticle it has), calculate the price to usd and it's about $1180. So I'm trying to choose as wisely as possible :) |
