Hello Guys,
I've been lurking  around here the last few days.  Almost pulled the trigger on a few scopes.  I have a new
Weatherby that will be ready to pick up on Monday (10 day waiting period in Cal).  I'm new to big game hunting, just did 2 pig hunts this spring.   However I have been into upland game hunting for 15 years now.

Here are the specs
gun  270 Weatherbv Magum.  Weight about 6.75lbs, 130gr TSX
Im not a target shooter but will do some to hone my skills.
Range 100 to 400 yards with the possibity of going out to 500
im older and its harder to see long distances so a little extra mag may be nice as well as a good size objective for after sunset shooting
and
Good eye relief for peace of mind

I have been looking at the Zeiss, Swarovski, Leupold.  I would like to keep the cost below $1,500.

I played with Zeiss's rapid Z program and with my bullet i get some irregular distances.  Maybe I don't know how to use the program.  I like the Swaro BT system or the Leupold CDS.   Maybe none of those toys are necessary.

I really want a good reiiable scope but i like my toys too.  I would appreciate any of your expert advice.
thanks
Ken

I have the same gun in a 257 Bee.  I use the 4.5x14x40mm Leupold.  I have the same on my 270 Bee, in a regular MKV sporter.

Premier Hunter 3-15X50. $1650 for the non illuminated. A little over budget, but worth it.

For 1500 bucks if you are serious, which it sounds you are. I'd try to go with the Swarovski 5-25x52. I have 2 of these scopes. One with plex reticle & BT. The other sits atop my 270 WSM with a ballistic reticle, very nice glass although I like the plex reticle BT set up better for low light hunting. You should look at the  3.5-18x44.

My 2nd choice would be the Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14 either 44 or 50 mm rapid Z 800. Zeiss just announced on their website they have a ballistic turret designed just for your factory load. Like I said I like the solid reticle and ballistic turret better than ballistic reticles. You can get this scope for about 1 grand.

You might be doing something wrong the Zapid Z calculator, its very simple to use and everyone I know that has a rapid Z loves them.

These are my choices. I'm normally a Zeiss guy but the Swaros have better glass than the "Conquest" models. But if hunting in poor or extreme low light isn't a big priority & you just want to target shoot a little after sunset then the Conquest should be sufficient.

I'm not knocking Leupold but you simply are not going to get the same quality glass, brightness, sharpness, defenition and light transmission in a Leupold than you will with a Swaro or Zeiss.

The Swar 5x25 is probably too much magnification for my needs the 3.5-18 is probably more than enough for my needs.  I guess at my age a 44 objective is all that i need at 10x.  I really like the 3-18x50 bt but that one is out of my price range and i shouldn't look at it :).

Thats why I bought my 5-25, the 3-18 Z6 is very nice but that price makes my nose bleed. Smile The Zeiss Davari 4-16 is incredible to, but it also a little steep for my altitude.

i looked at the Premier but the instructions for the balistic reticle make my head spin.  Maybe there is an iphone or droid app for it
