My first 2 pics would be the Conquest and the 4200, in that order.

I'd go with at least 40mm maybe 50 if your Yote hunting in low light. and my self I like a little higher power than mentioned. JMO

Bushnell Elite 4200 with Rainguard would be a fine choice and be well within your budget.

Conquest and Elite are both on the heavy side but great bargains. If you want to keep the weight down get a Sightron BigSky 3-9x42. $380 - a $50 rebate and you get a hydrophobic coating.

The best deals going are the $299 Conquest such as this one:

The Elite 4200 3X9X40 weighs less than the Sightron Big Sky. The Zeiss you referenced is 3/4 Oz more. Not much of a difference. Both scopes appear to have fewer Quality issues than the Big Sky. The 4200 is a great value! I own all three and they work very well for me.

Plex would be fine. Sight it in for 200 yds.

You guys are suggesting a 3x9 or a 4x mag for hunting at 250 yds? As a newbie, please explain why you wouldn't want a 5x20 or something there abouts?
thank you, M

Field of view. Have you ever tried to find a target close in or moving while using too much magnification? Anyway 250 yds is just barely over point blank range for .243

I have a 2.5-10 on my 243.  It covers all I feel I will need to 300 yards.  A 3-9 will work the same.  What it comes down to really, is your choice in brands.  Had a 4200.  Didn't like the eye relieft.  Have a Sightron SII, like it better.  My 243 now wears a Kahles (priced above your stated budget).

Many thanks to all of you folks for your inputs here, it is much appreciated. I did pick up my Savage 243 rifle today, and also splurged for a Leupold model 61120, 4.5x14x40 . It appears to be very optically good, with a front objective lens adjustment. It also has a "Boone and Crockett" reticle which I wanted.
Again, thanks, Maori Big Smile
