So I picked up one of the Remington 597 17HMRs that had been recalled a couple weeks ago.  most of what I read had them having problems when dirty or fired rapidly.  This gun will be used for coon hunting 99% of the time.  Shot range from 15ft to 100ft at times.  Right now I tossed a Burris fast fire on there and sited it in at 35ft.  This is kinda a band aid right not but I want a low powered scope that will let me have some zoom to get into some of the tight spots the coons can crawl into with good results.  Thinking 2-7 or something similar.  Paralax may or may not be an issue with trying to focus down that close sometimes but I don't think on 2X or lower I'd have an issue.  Recommendations?  Price not an issue.

SVT.   I have a 4-12x40AO on mine and use for both coon and squrriels.  I have never had a problem shooting very close or out to 100yds.  Not sure I've taken a shot at 15' though.  something in the 2-12 would be ideal... in case you want to shoot some precision but you prolly don't need a high above 8 or 9 for hunting.

My nephew got one of these from our hosts and he loves it:

Bushnell 3-9x40 Elite Rifle Scope
Stock # - BUSE3940SF
  • Matte
  • Multi-X
  • 1"
  • Side Focus                                         <*****
  • RainGuard® HD
  • Ultra-Wide Band Coating
  • Argon Purging Process
$249.95

this might be a bit overkill...  specially on the top end, but gets you a bit closer on bottom end

Bushnell 2.5-16x42 Elite 6500 30mm Rifle Scope
Stock # - 652164M
  • Matte
  • Fine Multi-X
  • 30mm
  • Side Focus - 10 yards to infinity
  • RainGuard® HD
  • 3" Sunshade
$749.00

Nikoplex Nikon 4-16x42 Monarch Riflescope
Stock # - NIK8421
  • Matte
  • Nikoplex
  • 1"
  • Side Focus
  • Sale Price Ends 3-10-2013
$299.95

Dual-X Weaver 3-15x42 Super Slam Rifle Scope
Stock # - 800330
  • Matte
  • Dual-X
  • 1"
  • Side Focus
$519.95

if you click on this one below... says: Parallax Setting (yds)Adjustable: 50-Infinity   but I can't see how they do it.....  but it would be nice!  Too bad they don't make it in the 2-10x42 - that would be ideal!!

Zeiss 3-15x42 Conquest HD5 Rifle Scope
Stock # - ZEI5226219920
  • Matte
  • Plex
  • 1"
$899.95

I couldn't find anything in the 2x that has side focus or AO...  I'm not familiar with some of the less known brands such as Hawke to suggest them... but their might be one there.  koshkin might have insight to that.

take em!

I dont know much about this scope but I really like the idea of the balistic reticle it has designed for the 17hmr.

G, I put a Vortex Viper 2-7 on my .17HMR. Works great at all distances.

I see these AO on rifles meant for rimfire use, and they seem like they would be such a pain, for the distances used, when there are scopes that will work at those distances, without having an AO. Just my opinion, and I do not mean to steal your thread, just asking.

I had a 2-7x Nikon (not a rimfire scope) on a .22 LR, thinking it would be ideal. While shooting at 50 feet, the parallax was pretty bad. I could leave the gun sitting in a rest untouched and move my eye back and forth while looking through the scope and see the crosshairs shift on the target about 2 inches. A 4x rimfire scope solved the problem. I would think if you got a 2-7x rimfire scope, you would not have a problem, since it should be set parallax free at the distances you anticipate shooting.
I think a standard 3-9x scope is set parallax free at 100 yards. But I stopped buying scopes without the AO because beyond 100 yards, if you do the test I mentioned above, you will see the crosshairs shift on the target with most scopes without the AO. That kinda kills precision shooting.
