    Posted: September/02/2010 at 18:20
I recently purchased a Remington Model 700ss 5-R Milspec in .308.
It will be used for hunting/target shooting.  Any suggestions on a scope would be greatly appreciated.
I'm looking to spend around $1000 on the scope.
Something variable with at least 50mm objective.
Been looking at the Trijicon Accupoint 2.5-10x56....was very impressed with the glass.
Also some help with bases/rings???? Too many to choose from!
Thanks for the Help!

Welcome to the OT.

I would check the scopes for sale section here on the OT for a smoking deal on a Trij 5-20.  The scope is awesome save for lackluster internal adjustment.  Invest in a canted rail if you grab that one and are planning on spinning your elevation dope.

Thats great advice, Rancid has one that has been lightly used and if I trusted anyone to give a great scope for a deal, its RC

Not trying to hock my wares, but I do have a 5-20 for sale, great scope.

The primary difference between the 2.5-10 and the 5-20 (other than magnification range, of course) is the capped turrets on the 2.5-10 make dope changes something of a hassle.  If you plan to dope from the reticle, capped turrets are fine; if you plan to dope the turrets, you will want target turrets.

Both are good scopes (the 2.5-10 and the 5-20), I had the 2.5-10 on a hog gun for a year or so, took a huge Russian bore with it.

For the money, Trijicon's glass is good, their scopes are tough and seem to hold up well.

Other options are IOR and Zeiss Conquest.

Tell us at what ranges you plan to shoot and we can help narrow the field a bit.  There are MANY great scopes in the $1000 ballpark.

Ok guys...thanks for all the help/info.

I got a great deal on a Trijicon 2.5-10x56 mil dot (TR22-2G) at my local gun store. I got it for $730.00. I thought that was a pretty good deal and couldn't let it pass.
Now all I need are some mounts/rings.

I like the Leupold Mark 4's and GG & G's.

Any thoughts/recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

David

I like the Talley's (except for the screws sticking out of the bottom of the rings)

I went with the EGW base (0 moa)
I also bought an EGW base for my sons Savage Edge (EGW is currently the only company making a 1 piece base for the Edge)
Both purchased through SWFA! Excellent
I got the GG & G Sniper Grade Steel rings. I found them at the low price of $109.00 w/free shipping.

Thanks for all the help thus far! I'm kinda new to the long gun and need all the help I can get (kinda been a pistol only guy).

I'll post some pics when I get all the parts in and get her put together.

Wes ,who did the color on the barrel, looks great. After 15months with my 5r I had Bob Hart do a glass bedding,a trigger job [2 1/2 #'s] & recrown the barrel, tightened things up very nicely @ 300yds.
