Are you looking to dial your shots or are you considering a ranging type reticle? Target shooting?

Monarch if BDC is of value to your style shooting 4x16 or 5x20......bushnell elite if a plex reticle is more your style, 4x16 or 6x24.

That's a nice rifle you have. There might be more help in the tactical or target forum.
My M700 heavy has a 6x42 Leupold Tactical on it and it works well for me. Our club only goes to 200yds., though.
Here are some suggestions close to your price range, some are a little over.
A solid choice and well respected around here: http://www.swfa.com/c-231-super-sniper-rifle-scopes.aspx
Burris can get you in with a wide selection and they have pretty good glass: http://www.swfa.com/c-591-burris-xtreme-tactical-rifle-scopes.aspx
The Leupold line is extensive and a solid choice but is pushing your price envelope: http://www.swfa.com/c-591-burris-xtreme-tactical-rifle-scopes.aspx
You can look on the http://www.samplelist.com/default.aspx?display_num=10&mfg_selection=54&prod_type=1&hide_sold=false at the IOR Tactical. IOR is supposed to have excellent glass. IOR is very well respected around here.
The Sample List can help with reducing the cost of getting into Club Leupold, too, and there is also a nice selection of Nikon Tacticals there, also: http://www.samplelist.com/default.aspx?display_num=10&mfg_selection=9&prod_type=1&hide_sold=false
Hopefully some of our tactical shooters will be around on this thread. They are very helpful.

I have a Meopta 4-16x44 on my 5-R.  It's on a 30mm tube and is clearer and brighter than the 4.5-14x50 Conquest I took off.  Tactical turrets are smooth and repeatable.  Absolutely an excellent scope.   Thinking about one for my .223 PSS, too.  Good luck.  Drummer

Here is the SWFA link. The Meoptas are in your price range, too.

Cheaptrick,

I'm really undecided.I haven't shot centerfire rifles much since I was a teenager and I'm alot older than I want to admit now.

It's going to be used mostly target punching and once in awhile hunting, although it's a bit heavy to be carrying around too much.

Most shooting will be 300 yards or less at the range until I can find a place to shoot 500 yards on a regular basis.

I've been thinking a 10 or 12 power scope would probably be suffucient.I've never played with a mildot scope too much and kinda think it would be fun to learn. Joe

I tend to like the 4.5-14 x 50 Leupold VXIII (30mm) with a Boone and Crocket Reticle for a hunting scope.  The baistic reticles only work at the scopes  highest power unless it is a FFP type scope.  I think there are several scopes you should consider as well : Bushnell 4200 in the 4-16x40 is a very nice clear scope but with no balistic reticle. Bushnell 6500 scopes are new and not out yet but have a huge range of power the 4.5 goes to 30 (thirty) power and a mil dot can be used for hold over but there again for a balistic reticle to work consistently the power must always remain constant.  IOR makes fine glass and their 4.5-14x50  30mm tube tactical scope with MP8 reticle would be high on my list as the difference in price between it and the VXIII is marginal and the IOR tactical while having target style knobs uses covers which is more brush hunting friendly than a M1 style Leupold tactical knob. The MP8 reticle could very easily be used for known hold over at varying distances and I would probably set the cross hair center at 200 yds then take it back to 3, 4, &  500 holding the same cross hair centered on the target and note where on the reticle the actuall bullet impact corresponds to the mil marks - that mark is your known hold over at 14x.  Make a cheat sheet and tape it to the scope cap. This scope also gives you the option of dialing in correction for distance and windage should you progress to that level of experience.

Maybe a little over budget but very nice pieces of glass. I run one on a .270 WSM and love the bullet drop compensating reticle. These are very easy to dial in and use at all yardages.

About a year ago I started dabbling in the target shooting arena. I bought the Leupold 6,5-14 x 50. I used it for one week and upgraded it to a 8,5 to 25X.

My advice would be to go for the maximum power your budget would allow, BUT THE SAME QUALITY GLASS. Do not buy a lesser quality for higher magnification.
I know a lot of people say that a 10x or so is good to go to 1000yds and mirage etc. Between 8,5 and 25 is 9x and 10x and 14x and......25x. But on a 14x scope, after 14x is nothing.
