I recently bought a model 700 SPS in 300 mag.  Im trying to decide on a new scope to get.  I typically hunt open country mule deer and elk in the mountains.  I want a  4-12X40.  I' ve been looking at the Leupold VX-I, VX-2, Nikon buckmaster, and the new Simmons Aetec Master Series.  Just hoping someone could give me some advice on what to get, based upon how it holds zero with the kick of a 300, and just the quality of the scope.  I'd like to spend less than 300 maybe up to 400, if i think it's necessary.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I'd go with the Leupold VX-II if you can afford it. I've scoped a light weight (6 3/4 Lbs) .300 Win Mag with a Leupold and never had any problems.

I've owned VX-I, VX-II & VX-III scopes, no complaints here.

I favor the grand slam. Wouldn't be a bad choice for your application. Definitely worth the money.

Weaver 4.5-14x40 Grand Slam

  • Matte
  • Dual-X
  • 1"
  • Adjustable Objective

Good recommendation Brady, the Grand Slam would be a cost-effective alternative to the Leupolds. (Why didn't I think of that!?)

My only hesitation with the Weaver would be the warranty. What kind of warrany do they carry? (This may not be an issue after all)

For the money I would go with the Grand Slam as well. The Micro-Trac adjustments of the Weaver Grand Slam line are way better than the friction clickless adjustments of the VX-I, or the click adjustments of the VX-II.
