Need some help!   I've verified that illuminated reticles are legal for big game in Colorado, so now my scope options are really open.   I'm looking to mount a 300 Wby Vanguard backcountry.    shots to 500 yards,  most around 300.    is 2.5-10 enough magnification?    looking at Vortex Viper HS 2.5-10x44 or 4-16x44, Leupold VX3-L, VX-3, VX-R, etc...

2.5-10 would be plenty in my opinion.  even a 3-9.  Why do you want illumination? do you hunt a lot in low light?

Illumination is not critical.   just good light gathering,  that's why I'm thinking the VX3-L.

Of everything I listed I'd go with the Kahles off the SL if it were me.... or a new Swaro Z3 for size and weight savings.

I have a Zeiss Conquest 3-9X40 #20 Z-Plex on my MkV 300 Weatherby in Warne Lever Rings & Bases
It is perfect for that rifle.  Remembering that the 300 is a hunting rifle, 3-9 power is perfectly adequate
Higher power is not needed, that is the reality. I wouldn't worry about illuminated reticles or any other unnecessary gizmos.  I have seen ridiculously big and powerful scopes on hunting rifles, and this simply shows inexperience in the real world of game hunting. Men like Jack O'Connor and many others hunted Elk, Bear, Mountain Goat and the Wild Sheep of North America with 4x scopes. Jon Sundra always hunted with a 6x. Trust me when I say 3-9x40 is plenty of scope..

The 4.5-14 Conquest with Rapid-z 800 is a pretty good fit if a lot of longer shots are in the plans. If not a ballistic reticle, some good turrets would be a plus. Not to mention something durable. I had one of those Backcounty rifles in .300 wby, and they buck pretty good.
