I have a savage 22-250 that I will be using for long range target and varmint.  I have not used scoped rifles much, mostly open sights.  I want to shoot 100yrds thru 500 yrds.  I am a right handed with left eye dominant.  The choices I have narrowed down too is:

Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x40

Burris Signature Select 6-24x44

Weaver Classic V24 6-24x42

I am also opened to suggestions.  I am willing to go as high as 500.00 right now.  I would like to be able to see bullet holes in paper at 300yrds.  I have been using a bsa 6-24X40 and have been able to get 3/4" groups at 200yrds but I would like a better quality scope.  Thank you for any suggestions.

I have a M700 22-250 coming that I just bought this week.  I removed a Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x40 mil-dot from a DPMS LR-308 and replaced it with a SS10x42.
The Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x40 is going on the 22-250 with a TPS base and either TPS low rings or some QRW rings I have extra if the TPS sight axis is too low.  I think both scopes will better fit the machine.

So that is my vote.

If your not shooting little critters you might be better served with say a 4.5-14x. When that 6-24 was on the DPMS rifle, I never turned it up past 14-16x for shooting paper, even to 400yards which is about the farthest I ever shot with that rifle to date.  I prefer the 4200 4-16x50 for pure paper shooting. For the varmints and that rifle, you should be right on.

I think you will be quite impressed with the 4200 compared to the BSA.

Hell, I really hope that me and the incoming 22-250 can shoot .75 groups at 200yrds. If I can hold that kind of MOA to 300yrds I'll be super happy and super surprised. Nice shootin!

Since I haven't posted in awhile, I'll go out on a limb with one of my less-than-IMHO comments, basing it upon all that I've been reading here at this Forum for the past 3 months, all the while agonizing over which brand and what statistics.

IMHO which brand to buy ??  Leupold......

why ??  customer service.  I don't recall reading one single comment about Leupold's customer service being anything less than superb.  And because I now own two Leupold's, I'm very comforted to know that if it needs fixing, it will (expectantly) be repaired correctly the very first time around.

I own a brand-new Burris FFII and I like it a lot .... but what I've been reading around here tells me the Burris folks aren't necessarily dependable/reliable.  Several folks at this Forum really tout the FFII and I believe they are right to do so, I've no complaints at all with it's performance.  But I sure hope it never gives me the kind of problems which require factory/warranty intervention.

I'd really like to get a Bushnell 4200 because my good pal very highly recommends it, but based upon what I've read here I'm not at all comfortable with their customer service should I want it or need it.

Anyway, I reckon it's obvious that all I've read here at this Forum (and elsewhere too) has turned me into a Leupold fan.  Oh well.... I'm also a USC fan, maybe that explains it.

Now that I've got that off my chest.......

Cheers,

Carl

I would like to get a Leupold, but I don't know wich one would fill my needs.  Perhaps a Leapold VX_II 6-18x40.

I would prefer a 1" scope.  Other than a clearer sight picture, what are the other pluses of using a higher quality scope?  I would like to be able to bring in the target close.  I know that these questions are asked often on this forum, and I have searched and I am still confused as to what would be the best scope for me.  I really like the what I hear about the SS 16X42.

What are the disadvantages or advantage of using a fixed power scope?

I would opt for the Leupold if you want a higher magnification range scope with a shorter tube and a greater elevation adjustment range.  And yes, the customer service is top notch.

I have not had to send any of the four Bushnells in for service (knock on wood) so I can't speak to Bushnell's customer service.

The Loopy isn't going to give you a brighter/clearer image over the 4200.

Advantages to the fixed power is that you can use the mil-dot system for ranging.  You can also do this with the variable power but you need to reference a certain power in order to be accurate.

If your hunting varmints with significant range, you might need to be concerned with recticle thickness.
