Picked up a DPMS in .204.  Has flat top receiver.  Need a scope for shooting p-dogs and a little bit of paper.  My other varmint guns have variable scopes, but most of the time they stay on 10 to 12x.  Was thinking about getting a fixed 10x for this gun.  Smart, not smart, other suggestions?  Never scoped one of these before.

At 3,700-4,000 FPS, that round is scream'in!  A 32-grain round at 4,000 FPS would be instant death to most small anaimals, it should be flat-shooting and very enjoyable.

A fixed 10X is a nice scope, "enough" magnification for most jobs, not too much for most others; however, with the versatility of that round, I'd go with a variable.

I haven't shot or scoped a .204, but have shot and scoped some fast varmint rigs, and I think you would more fully appreciate something with a good zoom range.  Though, in truth, I am not an avid varmint shooter.

The 10X SS would be no bad choice, but I think some other options might serve you better.

Maybe the Bushnell 6500 2.5-16.  Yours is a situation where you might want a little more than 10X, as the round has the capacity to get there fast without a significant rainbow.

John,
A fixed 10X would work fine for the purpose you intend to use it (pd's).  If that's the way you want to go, the SS 10X would fit the bill very well at a very reasonable price.

If you want a variable, something in the 2.5-10X, 3-12X, 4-16X range with ballistic reticle would be a great choice.  For a dedicated precision varmint scope, I'm personally intrigued by the Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14X44 w/ Rapid-Z 800 & side focus.  That seems to me to be a perfect long range pd exterminating scope.  Keep in mind that if you go too high on magnification, it makes it harder to spot your shots through the scope.  It doesn't take much recoil at all to jar your scope off the target with high magnification/ narrow FOV.  Most of the time, I use between 10X - 14X when shooting pd's.

For specific scope recommendations, how much moola are you willing to part with for the scope?

I have a REM 700 SPS 204 and really enjoy it. I mounted a Bushnell 4200 6x24 mil-dot.......I find that I stay around 12X but the higher works great for paper shooting

RC - that is exactly the reason I selected this round.  Flat shooting with low recoil.

RD - don't have a set budget at this time b/c I'm not sure what I want.  If a certain scope looks like it is the ticket, that is what it will be.  Might have to save a little longer, but I want this done right.

Agree too much magnification does take you off target, and seeing the results is most of the fun.  With this gun, given the weight, caliber and action, should be able to spot most shots with around 10x.

Also got to find a way to mount what ever I get.

The new SWFA SSALT mount is a good piece of gear, and hard to beat at the price.  Also, it comes with 1-inch inserts in 30mm rings, so whatever you get, it'll work on the mount.

As I said, I'm not much of a varminter, but I've moved away from most fixed-power scopes (unless, by virtue of the gun or the round, I have very limited range - such as with my .22 and my 45/70.)  Variables are now very rugged, very reliable, and very clear and bright.

The SS10X would do you fine, no question.  Personally, for shooting small targets at 300 yards, I'd want just a bit more magnification - but not much.

I definitely like the IOR for that application. Heavy gun, and heavy scope though. Still I like the combo, and the SALT mount idea.
