I am trying to decide on a scope to put on a Ruger 77/17 I am planning on purchasing. I was thinking of going with a Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14x42 Ballistic Plex scope. I was wondering if there are any scopes in this price range ($400 or less) with a similar reticle but with better optics than the FF2. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks

I have decided on a Burris Signature Select 4-16x44 Ballistic Plex scope. I found one for $400 on Ebay and bought it for my .17 HMR, thought it was too good of a deal to pass up.

Ive got a 4200 4-16 on my HM2. Great scope. I like Burris also. Plan on getting one for my 300mag.

Elite 4200 is a great scope as well. I have a 4200 2.5-10x40 on my Savage 10ML-II muzzleloader, excellent low light performance, could use a little more eye relief though.

The 4200's are really great scopes, I have a 6-24 mildot on my 17 and really like it. The only thing i don't care for is the relative lack of adjustment range. Only 26MOA. My next scope will be a monarch 6.5-20 for a 223. That would also be another good scope for a 17. the 5.5-16.5 would fit your budget and make a good all around scope with good glass. The new buckmasters with the side focus are also very nice. I handled one at the gun shop and was impressed by its features.

I may have to get a 4200 4-16 for my next varmint rig. I had already gone with the Burris Signature Select as I got it at a great price.

The Burris Ballistic Plex reticle was designed to work with just about any caliber and comes with detailed instructions and decals, that depict what the lines represent for different calibers, that you can stick on your rifle stock.  Here is what the hold overs work out to be for .17 Hornady Magnum 17 grain Hornady VMax bullet moving at 2550 feet per second.

As you can see it is very simple to shoot any where from 100 - 300 yards with this reticle.  The Burris Ballistic Plex reticle is available in several scopes.

Chris,

I agree that the Burris Ballistic Plex scopes are a great choice for a .17 HMR. I do not like BSA though and would not buy one of their "Sweet 17" scopes for any price. Burris definitely gets my vote for a good rimfire magnum scope.

Have you used a BSA Sweet 17?

No I have not tried out the Sweet 17, but I have some experience with other model BSA scopes and they were of very poor optical quality even for the low price point. I have heard mostly bad things about BSA, I am sure most others on this forum would agree that BSA is one of the worst scopes made.

I do like the Burris Ballistic Plex scopes though.

I figured your opinion was not based on experience.  I have never heard of anyone not liking the BSA Sweet 17 scopes that have actually used one.  You can not judge an entire product line on hear say or a bad experience with one product.  Yes, BSA does offer low end scopes at low end prices but they do also make some scopes worthy of consideration.
