Hi: I have what is probably a basic question...I have a Ruger Charger that I recently acquired, and I want to put a decent scope on it...Most of my shooting is at 50 yds or less and of the plinkiing variety...Is a scope for these distances a poor choice? Would I be better off with a red-dot type sight? I have heard that the cheaper red-dot sights have large dots that cover too much of the target at 50 yds to be effective...Are there any good red-dot sights with smaller dots that would serve me better? I guess my budget is $200 or less for either a scope or red-dot...I want to get the best from the Charger, but I also want to have fun with my 63 year old eyes! Hope my question is clear and reasonably intelligent...Thanks for the assistance...

I use a 4x burris extended eye relief pistol scope on my charger. works great. Your choice depends alot on the size of targets you will be using. I like to shoot old 12 gauge hulls out to 100 yards, and clay targets to about 150 yds. The advantage of the 4x scope is that it takes advantage of the charger set up if you do want to shoot small targets close.

Thanks for the reply...Would a set 4X scope also be usable at shorter distances?...I don't really understand "parallax" error but I know it can be an issue...I like the idea of a single power scope...In the past, on other firearms, when I have used a variable power scope, I tend to get it set at one power and keep it there anyway! Thanks again,

Steve

I have a ruger mk II with a burris fastfire that I enjoy.  For the charger setup, though I think I'd prefer either a 2x or 4x.  Here's one that will likely satisfy you pretty well:

Here's a pretty good deal:

Also, +1 on DCAMM's suggestion of that little Leupold. Had the previous generation of that scope, bought it used and it hung in there for years while I had it and worked great when I sold the whole rig.
