I have purchased a Winchester Model 70 XTR (1979) in a 264 win mag caliber. I will take a Tasco scope off of it and am trying to decide what scope to select to take its place. I hunt in MS. Maximum shots are normally 400 yards or less maybe out to 500 on rare occasions. I want to take advantage of as much light gathering capability as possible. I currently have these choices - a NIB Zeiis 3X12X56 for $836 (total cost), - a Sightron II Big Sky 3.5X10X50 NIB off the Internet for $438.99 (total cost) and - I am watching a Leupold 3.5X10X50 (used) currently on Ebay for $202 with 4 days left to go and $15 shipping (Probably sell for $350 to $400).
Three questions.
1. Do I need that big an objective diameter to accomplish what I want? 2. Of these 3 scopes what is the best choice quality and economic wise to accomplish what I want? and 3. Are there choices that I have overlooked that I should look at?
Thanks in advance for your advice - I have a bad habit of spending a dollar to save a dime.
FYI.... this site pretty much discourages ebay purchases.... for a couple of reason's, one, our site is sponsored by SWFA and there are many ripoffs on auction sites.
Based upon your stated requirements and the ones you are currently considering, I immediately suggest you consider the below from SWFA's samplelist. All as good or better deals than you are currently considering:

If it were me Id go for the higher magnification of the Zeiss 4.5-14x50 Conquest up above. My eyes need as much help as they can get. If you are shooting out to ranges like that, thats what I would suggest....Or check out SWFA and pick up the 3x12x56 Zeiss, although thats a pretty big objective, but it would help with more light at higher powers, like 8X max at dusk...I have 2 Zeiss Conquests a 3.5x10x44 rapid Z 600 and a 4.5x14x44 Rapid Z 800...BOTH are excellent scopes and a guy really needs no more than that I feel...........
+1 for the sample list, you know what your getting then
Yeah, but $350 for a Demo B Zeiss Conquest 4x32? SWFA is the first place where i go shopping for riflescopes. However, excuse me if i remain loyal to my wallet, rather than to any specific company.

I was more or less saying it to say your not getting something damaged or refurbed without disclosure. Don't get so defensive man, we just dont' want folks to get burned.

I would say that the samplelist item was on there before a price drop of the new ones or something else we may not know about. I am sure someone will bring it to the attention of the SWFA staff and they will look into it.
