Anybody know someone or some application that you can use to color your scope housing other than matte, gloss, or silver? Got my first semi custom gun in cerakote and it is khaki and olive drab, looking for some scope options for a full camo rig.

look at brownells any of the gun colors that don't need to be heated/baked on.....also many of the places that do the dip camo will do scopes ...but at your own risk.

How about Duracoat.  didn't Joe use duracoat on the guns he did?

I painted my Bushnell legend with Duracoat.  It's very tough once cured but I'd recommend  mediablasting  or sanding the surface to ensure proper adhesion.  I taped off some areas for a more professional look.

Sanding the scope housing?  What can I put over the lenses to ensure nothing gets on them?

Use blue or green painters tape....trust me I am a painter. first clean the scope with alcohol.
 not the lenses.

Prep work is the most time consuming and the most arduous.  I'd use painter tape, and a razor blade to trim around the bell housing as I would not put anything on the glass itself. think about getting some flip ups painted separately. I would also paint the caps by themselves and tape up the turrets and trim. I don't know about sanding the main tube, maybe just use some 0000 steel wool and some kind of degreaser.  Just my .02.

I used blue painters tape but I didn't tape to the glass.  I taped jut inside the opening and wadded up tissue paper to keep it away from the glass.  This pic may show a little better.

you can get what they call liquid sandpaper ....just don't drench it on,lightly coat it with a t-shirt rag if you have sensitive hands wear protective gloves.

Duracoat will stick to the scope surface without any sanding but you might get some flaking eventually.  I rubbed mine down with steel wool but light sandblasting would be better.

Thanks!  I debated on camo for the scope and barrel but ended up going for the more simple elegant look. Big Grin

I thought about doing a few on the side for some extra cash.  I put a lot of detail into it and it takes a while so it wouldn't be cheap.  I've only done the digital camo but I'm sure I could do other patterns.  If you know someone who wants it done let me know.

I would recommend the eastwood cleaner in addition to sanding.  You need to etch the surface and absolutely must remove ALL grease/oil/etc.

I have thought about the same thing,  but I just don't have the time to invest in a undertaking like that. Those of us who deal with paint daily know exactly how much time you invested in doing a job like that. The Devils in the details, and you have to be very meticulous for it to worth your while.  I argue this point all the time PAINTING is a ART not a science, you have to be a artist first and a tech guy second.

You're exactly right Steelbenz.  Painting is an art. I'm a landscape architect by trade so I have an eye for design.  I've had to learn the tech part along the way.
