I bought a new Marlin bolt action in 270 win. and have narrowed my scope choices down to 3.
1.Nikon Monarch 4x16x42
2.Sightron Sll 4x14x42
3.Leu varix 3  4.5x14x40

The Nikon and Sightron are within $40 of each other, the Leupold is $80 higher than the others.
I will be shooting paper and whitetail hunting out to around 300-400 yards.
What scope would be the best choice??

I've been exceedingly pleased with my Nikon Monarch 2.5X10X42mm on my 270.  I also have a couple of Buckmasters and VX-II scopes as well, all decent hunting scopes, but the Monarch is my favorite out of these.  I don't know how set you are on magnification (as you can save a few bucks going to the 10X), but in the field for deer hunting I set it at 6X and leave it, which IMO is adequate out to 300-400 yards.

As far as your other choices, from what I've read, I really don't see how you can go wrong with them either and like I've said I've been plenty happy with my VX-II's, I'm sure the VX-III's would be even better.

All very nice scopes and very simular in performance, you may also want to add the Bushnell 4200 4-16x40 scope to your list, its also very nice.

I would probably stick to something with more reasonable magnification rangeand choose between these two:

Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5-10x40
Sightron S2 Big Sky 3-9x42

The Nikon Team Primos would work for your situation as well...did you get an XL7??

............Agree here!................Why a 14x to 16x on the high end?

Lower the magnification and get the better glass for about the same money.

10x on the high end will do anything a 14x or 16x will. And for kill shots some never exceed 5x or 6 x anyway, even at extended ranges.

For small varmit use, the higher powers are better suited.
