Hi Everyone, hope you all faired well in 2005.  I am a new member but have been an avid deer hunter for most of my adult life, and have recently acquired on old Winchester model 88 in .308 caliber.  I took it to a local gun shop to look at scopes/rings and found that the Length of Pull combined with the position of the scope base mounting holes made scope selection non trivial.  The Leupold 1.75 x 6 I tried could not be mounted far enough back to allow proper distance from eye to scope eyepiece. A friend of mine whose rifle I see occasionaly as he lives in a different state, has an old Redfield on his rifle and if I remember correctly the Redfield seemed to be a very long scope with a great deal of distance between the bells and it seemed to be mounted so that it stuck out an inch or so behind the receiver.  Other than finding an old Redfield, does anyone have a suggestion on what type of scope/rings/bases would work with this old .308?  Cheers.  Jimmyp

I don't know how much Buehler Scopes Mounts has left in stock, but you can give Bob Ray in Orinda, California a call at tel.# 925-254-3201. He lists bases for the 88 & the 100 Winchester. I just recently got a set of bases from him. You will need a dial caliper to setup the front ring or have a gunsmith do the job for you. Make sure he is familiar with setting up these mounts. They are beautiful mounts and are very strong.

Wow nice gun.  My two favorite lever actions are the Winchester 88 and the Savage 99.  I put a one piece scope mount on my Savage 99 .308 and I know they make them for the Winchester 88, this is where I got the mount for my 99 at:

Also, I like the idea of a lower power scope on these fast handling rifles.  I put a 3-9 Pentax  on my Savage and wished I would have went to an even lower power, but I have no complaints with the Pextax scope.

Someday I hope to add a Winchester 88 in .358 Winchester it would make one heck of a pig gun

Happy shooting and great gun

AC

Gary at Talley sent me some medium height aluminum light weight one piece rings for it, they fit fine.  I need to decide between a Zeiss Conquest in 3 x 9 x 40 with #4 reticle or a Nikon Monarch UCC 3 x 9 x 40.  Both good scopes but other than the etched glass reticle I don't know if the Zeiss offers $175.00 or so more in value. jimmyp

We have a few of the Zeiss 3-9x40 Conquest on our samplelist right now for $399.95. Zeiss has a lifetime transferable warranty and these scopes are in almost new condition.

I have a Winchester model 88 in .308 cal with Buehler base and rings, and a Leupold 2-7 vari X II.  I've had a few probems with this setup over the years with the elevation setting having to be set at max to zero the scope at 100 yards.  Not sure if the base and rings were ver set up right although it was a pretty good shooter for several years..  Had it shimmed by a gunsmith once but that pushed it too far the wrong way.  Last time I sighted it in the group was all over the paper so I'm wondeing if it's time to remount the scope or change this setup.  The 2-7 scope is perfect - dial it down to 2 power for deer hunting in dark timber, dial it up to 7 for hunting more open country.

For bases and rings, there aren't a lot of choices.  Look at the Redfield base and maybe Leupold rings.  Weaver also makes bases and rings for this application.

Forgot to add, get a scope with good eye relief so the mounting location isn't as critical.  Carbine style lever actions look better, seem to point better and go through the brush better with a smaller scope.  The length of pull on my stock was way too short so I had a gunsmith measure me up and install (grind) a recoil pad that made the stock perfect for me.  Was pretty inexpensive and well worth it.  I've taken 20 + deer 2 elk and a number of varmits with this rifle and it's still my favorite even though I have several newer rifles now.
