I just bought a 25-06 Tikka Lite that I will use mainly to hunt deer in large fields. I hesitate on which scope would be the best: 6X24X40, 5.5X16X50, 4.5X14X40 6X18X40.

Also, I wonder if an Elite 4200, Nikon monarch or leupold VXII could be considered as equivalent interms of quality and brightness

what is you closest & farthest shot? if close is under 100 yards you dont want more than 4X, better
a 2.5-10. the current Nikon deal from SWFA cannot be beat. A vari X II is a step down from a
monarch or 4200.
deer are not small and being overscoped (power wise) will cause you to lose light early & late or
miss a chance at a moving deer.

Elite 4200 and Nikon MOnarch both compete against Leupold VX-3, not VX-2.  Optically, Elite 4200 has an edge here, but both Elite 4200 and Monarch have better glass than VX-3 or VX-2.

As for the magnification range, I'd be surprised if you really need the extra high magnification range.  I think it is seldom usable in the field.  Pick something with 3x or 4x low end and 10x to 14x high end.  If you are worried about low light performance, it is usually a good idea to go a little conservative on the magnification and get the highest quality glass you can afford.

good comments from both these guys - +1 on the 4200 OR monarch.

a 3-10, or 9 is plenty of magnification IMO.

Very good comments, thank you ! I already have 2.5-10 Elite 4200 on my 30-06 and 7mm Rem Mag. First, I was thinking about an Elite 4200 6-24X40 on the 25-06...so maybe a 4-16X50 Elite 4200 would be a better choice ? Or should I switch the 2.5-10 from the 7MM Rem Mag to the 25-06 and put the something else on the 7MM mag ? I've always been satisfied with the Elite 4200 and the local stores don't carry Nikon, so I would prefer Elite 4200 or Leupold. I didn't know that I would lose some light with a 6-24 compared to a 2.5-10. Does a wider opening (i.e. 50mm instead of 50mm) will compensate for that ?

Both the 30-06 and 7 mag (virtual ballistic twins out to 300) are more powerful than a 25-06. so I would not put the highest power scope on the lowest power rifle for deer hunting.
50mm will help a bit IF the scopes are of equal quality but you give up the low overbore mounting of a 40mm objective.
the monarch deal will save you a bunch over the 4200 and is equal quality by all accounts. the advice might be more helpful if we knew:
-spot and shoot?
-stalking?
-stand hunting?
-nearest & farthest shot anticipated?
-light conditions when you will be shooting?
-your budget?
all these factors can change the best choice a lot.

If shooting "large fields", I assume you may have some long shots and not so long shots. Cover both situations by going  for a 4200 Elite in 2.5x10 and you're set.

Very interesting comments again...to answer some of the questions asked, for deer hunting, I always spot and shoot, min 100 yards, max 30 yards, usually dawn or dusk, so very little light. My budget: around 500$.

After the replies i got, I hesitate between Elite 4200 2.5-10 X 40 or 50 mm, Leupold VX III 3.5-10 X 40 or 50 mm, or maybe a Nikon Monarch (which one ?)?

The difference between 40mm and 50mm, does it really worth the price ?

Also, I usually use the 7MM Rem Mag for moose hunting, which implies sometimes long shots. Should I put a 4-15 X 50 on the 7MM and switch the Elite 4200 2.5-10 X 40 on the 25-06 ?
