ok considering 3x9x36 soro and also s and b fixed power 4x36. I understand both are top quality optical instruments but does the S and B merit the extra hundred or so.

There are just a hand few 4x fixed being made now compared to a few years back.  A lot of it will come down to your application.  If you are in a lot of thick woods or brush, then I would lean that way.

Also, unless I'm mistaken, the S & B fixed power scopes are not aluminum but are steel. They MAY scratch easier and are a bit heavier than some others. But optic wise they are very good.

IMO, no. The Swaro 3-9x36 will be way more versatile and optically you would probably never see the difference.

I owned both of these scopes and found the s & b to be way clearer in low light, if I were buying again would definitely go the same way.

I would also suggest going with the S&B.

S&B does make some of their fixed power scopes out of aluminum (they are 30mm dia). But, those models are not currently sold in this country

You can do a lot more with a variable scope.

Swarovski's usually a safe bet, some of the best glass out there, limited lifetime warranty, and the customer service is outstanding.

If you want a fixed 4X, I'd also look at IOR.

I have one on a special-purpose rifle and it works great.  S&B might be a bit better, but for my purposes, I'll save the extra $$ and spend it on ammo, getting to better know my new gun.
