Have any of you done one? I know I have to fill out a form and send it in to ATF with $200.

I am more curious about how to tell how long the gun is? If its just a standard AR15, then I should be able to measure my current barrel, and overall length and subtract off the one I want, right?

I know I can't buy an upper until I have the stamp.

What barrel length to do you like? Caliber if not 5.56?

I am waiting on two right now, over three months now.  You can do the paper work online if you have a gun trust.  I would highly suggest getting one.  http://atfonline.gov/  then eforms and a form 1.

I measured mine from barrel length with stock collapsed.  I read of people measuring them both ways.

You can own an upper, it just needs to be attached to a pistol lower until your stamp is approved.  Which means having a carrier tube that cannot have a stock attached to it.

I did an 11.5 inch 223 barrel and a 8 inch 300 blk barrel.

You also have to have the lower engraved with your name (or trust name), town and state.  I just had a local trophy shop engrave my two.

There are several other on this forum that has done them and likely know a lot more about it that I do.  Hopefully they will chime in.

There is form1 and form4 depending on who does the registering as an SBR.

It is complicated, don't mess it up.

I also have 223 and 300BLK as well as a 9mm SBR.

Keep in mind: loud loud loud! Short barrel, lots of noise.

It's fairly simple to do an Eform 1. There are numerous YouTube videos on how to's. it's running about 90 days for our region.

This guy will do your trust for $100.  He is a real lawyer and also a shooter.  I was very happy with him, he spent a lot of time answering my questions both by phone and email.

Nice thing about the trust is you can then do the eforms which saves a ton of time.

If you go the trust route and get them submitted before July 13, you don't have to have everyone on the trust fingerprinted (no one need to be finger printer before July130 and you don't have notify your local cheif of law enforcement.   If you wait til the new rule goes into play you have to do both of those things.

I can help you with whatever you need. If you are doing 5.56/.223 I wouldn't go shorter than 10" or your velocity will fall off so much that you might as well have a 22. My favorite is 300 Blackout and I prefer the 8" configuration on that as it doesn't need the longer barrel to burn the powder. I also have a 9mm with a 5.5" barrel. Which caliber I would suggest would depend on what you are using it for.

I have seen people measure overall length with stock in and stock out. You are supposed to measure with the stock extended. We have SBRs from manufacturers that are done with the stock in too though.

The ATF Form 1 instructions for overall length say, "Specify one barrel length and overall length in items 4e and 4f as applicable. Note: if the firearm has a folding or collapsible stock, the overall measurement is to be made with the stock extended."

Here are a few common mistakes made on form 1s.

Be sure when you file the form 1 to put your trust name and not your personal name if you are going that route.

When listing your caliber put 5.56 and select MM in the drop down or if doing 300 blackout just select .300 and inches in the drop down don't put BLK or blackout.

When uploading your electronic documents there is 2 opportunities to do so. The first one is to be used for uploading pics of the receiver you are SBR'ing if it isn't common or listed in their database and the second one is where you upload your gun trust. If your trust is large you may have to save it in thirds and upload it that way. That is what I had to do.

If you're doing a trust do it ASAP before the new laws go into affect. If you want to do as an individual, which I don't recommend as you can't give others access to the SBR without you being with them or even have beneficiaries, I would wait until after the new law takes affect as you won't have to get permission from your CLEO and you just have to notify them and get pics and fingerprints.

I highly recommend going the trust route, if for no other reason than, solely because this route lets you pass the gun onto future generations.

Ok so let me ask another question. I can just submit the paperwork for the trust and not purchase something right now, correct?

Is there a fee for that?

I put my GF and my two sons in it. I think she wants full auto AR. I should have bought a bigger safe.

Yes you can do that.  The trust itself has nothing to do with the suppressors, sbr, sbs, or full autos

No for the paper work to the BATF  If you are going to be the builder of the SBRs, then you need to have the lower(s) now that you are going to use.  As to fill out the form 1 you have to have the serial number, manufacturer, and model number of the lower(s)  You will also have to have the lower engraved with your Trust name, city and state.  I believe before you can assemble it into a sbr.  CF2 and probably clarify that for certain.  I had mine engraved before I submitted my paperwork.

If you are buying ones that have been built by someone else, then things are different.  Though I am not sure how that works as I have not done one that way.  But there is a form 1 involved which is for the manufacturing and a form 4 for the transfer to you.

Well I have 2 anderson stripped lowers and parts kits, so that isn't a prob. I will just submit 1 of them for now.

What happens if I move cities? If gun is engraved?

I just got to get this done before the law changes. Dang if Hillary gets elected, I need to buy more lowers. And uppers.

I just got a PSA one a month ago on sale cheap.

I believe you have to notify the BATF and update your trust.  But the lowers don't need to be changed.  It matters that they are marked in the city they were built in, not where you lived

More questions.  I filed my form 1, and said I wanted an 11.5 barrel. What if I can't get one when I get approval, can I change it? What if my OAL is wrong?

I don't want a 1 and 9 twist barrel I don't think. I did find some that have an ER Shaw barrel, with a 1 and 9 twist, but think that isn't enough twist for a short barrel.

Thoughts?

First thing: you mentioned full, that has to be bought as a full auto, cannot make it so after.

Second: short barrels are loud barrels.

Third: you can do all this stuff when you want, the order is FAR more important than the timing.

Fourth: there is some confusion on the over all length, as most stocks are collapsible.  I have seen it reported as longed and as shortest, not sure the ATF has explicitly stated how to do it. Could be wrong on this one.
