A friend recently acquired a Sav. rifle, heavy barrel, round receiver with the tactical Choate stock, new in box.

First we ordered the Leupold one piece base; screw holes would not line up--did not fit.

Next the Leupold two piece base; rear base actually got in the way of the bolt--did not fit.

Finally got the Burris two piece.  The rear base was OK.  With some minor milling on the front base to clear the barrel bushing, finally got a fit.  Without the milling it would have been a return also.

Has anyone out there ever had similar problems?  Is it the gun, or the base manufacturers, or the weekend gunsmiths? I've mounted dozens & dozens without this much trouble.   We were ordering these bases by the numbers; should have got a fit the first time.  Comments please.

I have run into two (out of 8) previous Savages that the scope taps where not on center with the bore. Enough problems to be leery. Outstanding accuracy but some of the quality control issues really a bummer.

That is why I never buy Savage products. Low quality, poor quality control.

Can you tell me a little more about that Savage that you have?  Is it the new Accutrigger? What Caliber is it? Did you purchase the bases from SWFA?  Give me a little more info.  I am just curious if the bases that you received is what you were suppose to.  If the base that was sent to you is what either Leupold or any other manufacture says would fit and it doesn't it needs to be addressed so someone else doesn't receive the same wrong base.  Let me know.

I use a Ken Farrell one-piece base on my Savage and it works like a charm.  No issues whatsoever.

I heard that older Savages were often of spotty quality, but modern Savages seeem to be quite good.  From my experience and what I've heard from others, they are easily among the most accurate out-of-the-box guns available.  Low quality? Not from my experience.

Danny,

I own three of these Savage rifles. On all three are mounted with the Warne M666-20MOA Tactical bases. What allot of people have not figured out yet is that the Accu-Trigger Savages are NOT the same as the non Accu-Trigger models. When Savage went to the Accu-Trigger, is when they turned things around and started building a gun worth having. As for the guys that won't own Savage products, don't shoot against one..........you'll probably loose. I shot in the Idaho State Sniper Championship match this month and Savage was well represented. Of the 90 or so competitors, there were no less than 11 Savages. There I was with my FN-SPR and my Savage 10FPLE2-A and chose the Savage 308 with the SS16x42 Scope mounted on a Warne M666-20MOA base and Warne 614M Tactical rings.
