A regional sporting goods store has put this Savage on sale for $299.99.   Sounds like a great start to a project.  What say you?

Since I already have an '06, I'd probably want to go with a magnum.  Not sure if I would want the 7mm or the 300.  What's the advantage of each?   Too bad they aren't including the short actions, I'd be tempted to steel the $300 so I could build a .260!!!!

Does it include the accutrigger, if so I'd say its tempting.

Not sure about that, but I'm guessing it does not as they have the DM, which according to Savage's website, do not have the accutrigger.

I would go with the 7mm.  It will easily kill anything in N.A. and you don't have to deal with as much recoil.  Sounds like a great deal, especially if it has the accutrigger.

Would a 7mm be better on Elk than a 30-06?  What bullet would you use?  I like the sound of less recoil!

I have killed 3 elk with 160 grain bullets.  I prefer heavier bullets myself.  I would like to shoot 175s but my twist rate does not shoot them as well as the 160s.

At 200 yards a 160 nolser will have 2566 ft-lb energy 2688 fps in a 7mag.

A 165 grain nolser in a 30-06 will have 2322 ft-lb energy and 2518 fps

So the 7mm will be a little faster hit a little harder and have less wind drift and drop because of the higher BC and velocity.  But realistically to an animal I don't think there will be much difference.  So really you are just adding another caliber for the fun of it.

hell ya the 175 gr 7mm bullet has a very high b.c you would need a bullet in .308 over 200gr to equal it in that respect the 7mm is a very very capable round, and not really any more of a kick than your 06

personally, I would opt for accu-trigger and detachable mag, if that's available.....if not, detachable mag and after-market trigger.............if not, go to a used gun store......Bucky
