Hi,
I am interested in purchasing a savage 93R17BTVS(17HMR caliber), and was wondering what would be a recommended scope to put on this rifle. I have around a 300$ budget, so nothing over 200$ on the SWFA website, since I cant buy them, and they all retail for at least 100$ more here in Canada.
I will mostly be using this for target shooting at the 50 to 200 yard range. I may use it for one or two hunts, but that will not be the main purpose.
Thanks,
Chris

I am surprised no one seems to have responded to you on this.  For your budget and because of the reviews I have read, though I do not own one and can not offer first hand experience, take a look at a Mueller APV.  If you want to know what several folks think of this scope, check out rimfirecentral's website.  There are a whole bunch of folks there that love these scopes.

I had posted a similar topic and it appears I bought my savage .17 on the same day you posted. I am currently awaiting the delivery of my scope I bought through SWFA. I took somebody's advice and went for this one.

http://www.swfa.com/pc-10570-1505-mueller-45-14x40-apv-rifle scope.aspx

My post is here, when I get the scope and put it on and come back from the range, I plan on posting a picture of the rig and describe the performance.

I know you have a neat rifle there, I love the one I got.

I have a Mueller on a Marlin 917VS 4.5X14 and it has held up well, so much that I have 2 now and will purchase a third for the next gun (rimfire only)

This is my first post yay! Actually, I have the exact same rifle you asked about. Mine is the heavy barrel FVSS, sames as the one you mentioned with the same barrel and action, but I have the synthetic stock. I have a crappy Simmons $40 scope on there, absolute garbage.

My buddy has the same rifle as you (wood stock and all) and has a Bushnell Trophy silver 3-9x40 and he absolutely loves that scope, and it's under $100 USD. I have one on my NON-heavy barreled FSS model Savage 93 and I too love that scope!!

The only problem is, with his medium heigh scope rings it sits so low to the barrel that he can't fit the scope covers on it, without cutting the scope covers. So when I get a new 40mm scope for my FVSS, I'll probably have to try High weaver rings.

Good scope, great price!!

HELP!!

I too bought the Savage 93R17BTVS 17 hmr and put a silver Mueller apv on it.

Got it back in December and have had it out a few times trying to sight it in but I'm not too pleased and would appreciate any suggestions....

I've got about 200 rounds thru it now in four sessions. (cleaned after each session)  At fifty yards in a five shot group (in no particualr order) it will most often put two together and then three about an inch to the left .  Occasionaly the groups are spreaqd out even a little more sporadic. I also have a plain black savage in this caliber that will literaly hit dimes at 100 yds so I'm confident that my marksmanship is not the problem. Before I tried this afternoon I took the scope off and double checked that the bases were tight.

My next step is to take the scope off my .22-250 and try that on the 17.

Anybody else having similar problems or got any ideas? If looks counted this thing is a winner so I don't want to give up on it...

Was that all with the same type of ammo?  If yes, I'd try a different brand or bullet type and see what happens.  I'm not an expert, but that doesn't sound like an "optics" issue to me.... more like rifle - ammo issue.

Yes I'm using the 17g polytips. This is Winchester but I;ve been told by a few retailers that it's all made by hornady anyway, can anyone confirm this?

The only other ammo available is the hollow points, its either 17 or 20 g. I'll try that too.

I have to agree, there seems to be an ammo and rifle issue going on here. there are also times when the same box of shells will all be very different in the seating depth which can cause these things to happen. I would start measuring the shell lengths and start grouping them by manufaturer as well as cartridge length.

Switched scopes between the 17's and the plain black savage put 5 in a
.4" group with the Mueller scope. Scopes OK.

Tried two things that seemed to make a difference.

Tightened the action screws, don't have a torque wrench but did snug them up. I had disassembled the rifle when I first got it to adjust the Accutrigger.

Switched to the Hornady polymer tips instead of the Winchester. Can't see why this made a difference. Can someone confirm or dispell that this ammo is all made by Hornady?

Anyway, it has made a big difference. Holes are now touching at 50 yds, shot one 5 shot group in a three-hole string. No flyers except when I tried a couple of Winchesters. Again hard to believe but that's the results I've got.

Thanks for your suggestions. I'll take a pic of the target and try to post.

Not sure who makes Win's ammo, but they wouldn't be exactly the same anyway.  Stick with the ones that work well!

Well it likes Hornady that's for sure.

I guess I was spoiled by the plain black Savage. It shoots all the polymer tips extremely well and the HP's just slightly worse.

Thanks again for the tips.

Hiya,
I just recently purchased the exact same rifle. I mounted a Bushnell Banner 3.5-10x36 .17 Super AO with BDC Model # 71-3150 on it. This scope is specifically made for the .17 HMR Rifle. Got it sighted in about 2 weeks ago. Awesome! Getting 1/4 -1/2" MOA groups at 200 yds. Haven't found a range yet to go out further. The AO and BDC work great.
I bought this at competitor for $76.56.  Best other price I could find was $89.95 at competitor.com. In adddtion competitor is part of the Netshops. com network and will give you a $10.00 credit to your next purchase for submitting a review of your purchase. I used it to buy a Bushnell Boresighter.
Hope this helps. Good Luck

Have you looked at the Hawke line of scopes?
I found out about this brand when my Legend crapped out on me with less than 100 shots
on it. Yeah, Bushnell replaced it but after something like that happening I looked for something different, and yes, I found it. The quality, build, and toughness of these scopes are second to none. Their glass is more clear, sharper, and brighter and tougher than the Legend. It was hard to believe until I got it in my hands. Hawke is the only glass on my guns now. You just have to see to believe.
These scopes are for real!

Thanks for the info on Hawke scopes. Do you know of anywhere on-line to purchase?. Apparently there is no dealer near me that carries them

There are a couple of online sites you can get them. These scopes can and will take rimfire recoil so don't let the air gun website fool you.

Or, you can ask SFWA to get it for you. They can get it, from what I'vew been told.

Currently I have a Airmax 4-12X40, Varmint II 3-10X44, and another one that I can't mention, but all have at least 1500 to 2500 shots through them and I haven't touched
any of them for adjustments yet. These scopes are for real.
If you have any questions you can email them, I did. Now I'm sold on their scopes.
And by the way, their warranty is soild.

I've got a BTVS also, and the best I've seen was .57 MOA, and average 0.9 MOA. But 1/4 to 1/2 MOA? Is that the guns average group size? If so, that's practically 6mmBR/ 6PPC territory there. Pics?

I meant no malice at all. I'm just curious as to what his set-up is, and perhaps make my rifle perform as well as his. I suppose I can see how things can be interpreted maliciously over the internet. I'll try to not seem as critical or rude next time around.
