I am thinking of buying this gun in the 6.5 x .284 caliber. The question I have for some of you real gun people is can I interchange the barrels on that model? I know that the 30 06 and 308 have basically the same case head diameter, so the bolt will work for those calibers. I have been told that the Savage guns can be interchanged pretty easily. Thanks for the help.

As long as its the same case head diameter and it fits in the mag it should work.  May have some feeding issues with drastic case size differences but should work with some with no issues.  You'd need a barrel nut wrench and headspace gauges

You will also have to sight in the rifle every time you remove the barrel and put it back on. I figure you would expect this, but I have seen a lot of people who didn't understand this.

Thanks for those responses. A guy had told me it was pretty easy to change those barrels out even though the gun is not what you would call enterchangeable.  It does make me consider buying the gun more knowing that I could barrel it for a lot more common round without too much effort or expense. I guess it would be kindof like getting another gun for half price basically.

The barrels are easy to change. I have re-barreled my Savage once, and I am considering doing again. And you don't really have to worry about case-heads either, as the Savage rifle uses a floating bolt heads that are also easily swapped-out! And the 6.5-284 has the same head size as a 308/30-06 anyway.
