I'm looking to get into a bolt gun, with the possibility of getting into some longer range (500-600 yds) competition shooting this summer. With a budget of around 1k, looks like the best available platforms for a "starter" gun would be the Rem 700 SPS or the Savage 10 FP.
If anyone could offer experience with either gun I'd appreciate it...for optics I would top it off with a 10x or 16x Super Sniper to stay within my budget.

Thanks in advance!

I did my research and came up with the Remington. My main reason was the action, which seems to be the basis for many custom build rifles.
I bought the Rem700VSF. Unfortunately I have not shot with it yet, but hope to do so soon.

Goju - Take a look at the Savage 12BVSS.  I got mine in .308 and topped it with a SS10x42.  26" stainless, fluted barrel.  Accu-trigger.  If you're going to be shooting from a bench, the weight shouldn't be a deterence.  Seems like mine is pushing 14 lbs once you add in the base, rings, bipod.  I'm still in the learning stage, and it far exceeds my capabilities.  It'll put you real close to your budget.

The Savage is starting to get quite a following. For good reasons I might add.

Thanks for your comments.  I should have mentioned in my post that I intend to get a .308; ...the 700 VSF looks like a really nice rifle, but will probably be to spendy.

Can anyone offer a comparison between the Savage Accu-trigger and the Rem. X-Mark trigger? Is there an aspect of the action I should be taking into consideration? Is one as "up-gradeable" as the other? At this price point - is there a real difference between the two? Questions, questions...

I want to go with Remington, but the Savages I've seen lately are WICKED accurate!
Good luck! Both rifles are good to go.

those are both fine choices - the tikka T3 varmint would be excellent as well.

very good action and trigger.
