Anyone have any experience with the Weaver Grand Slam 2 pc. steel dovetail bases to go on a Sako Finnbear(or Forester, or Vixen, or Colt Coltsman) ?  I know, I know, the Conetrol's, and the Opitlocks are far better, but too much money for this project. I'm rigging my Finnbear 25-06 with a 50mm scope for a varmint rifle, and I can't spend a lot. IF I like it, I may spend a little more later on a better scope, mounts, and rings.  Thanks Gary

I'll be honest, I had four Sakos and the best rings I found for them were the Optilocks.  Pay once and be happy.  Just my 0.02...

These are the ones that tap on like the old Redfields? I have a set in use on an AV in .280 Rem.  No issues and I like the clean lines.  Just tap into place and you're good to go.  I like being able to use any standard Leupold style rings with these bases.

Hey magshooter, Thanks for the reply. I was beginning to think no one knew what I was talking about.
I don't have the bases yet, and I cannot find a picture of them that shows the bottom. The ones I ordered(weaver #48962) have a set screw(at least it appears the rear one does) that tightens against the dovetail. I kinda hate to scratch up the pretty checkering on the dovetail if its not necessary. I can't tell if the front base has a screw or not. Some say this type of base will continually work it's way forward with each recoil. I don't see how that is if the bases are as strong as they should be.
Apparently you've not had that problem. Do yours have any kind of a little "tab" at the back of the rear base like the original Sako ringmounts have? I read that the Finnbear, Forester, and Vixen have the same dovetail, as well as the colt coltsman. I guess that means the A V is different ?
Thanks a heap for the reply..... Gary

The Leupold rings for a Sako Finnbear do not have the peg on the bottom that fits onto the Sako dovetail integral mount.  Spend the money and buy optilocks and you won't ever have to worry about it.

The Weaver GS bases do not have a tab for the rear base that corresponds to the notch in the receiver.  The GS bases I have don't have a set screw.  You can still get Redfield bases that fit Sako's.  I will say that the finish is better on the Redfields.  I went with the Weavers because they were a little less than the Redfields and the finish was closer to the Zeiss Conquest I was mounting.

Thanks again magshooter1. The rings I ordered will be here in about 10 minutes, so I'll know more about them. Thanks for your input, and the links. It's amazing how you can scan the web for days and not find info as straight as the links you gave me. All part of growing up ???   :)   Gary
