Have a Sako Forrester L579 in .308.  According to the serial numbers, it was made sometime between 1962-1964.  Does anyone know if the "newer" Optilock ring mounts and bases from Sako would fit my rifle?  The rifle came with a Balvar scope.  I've heard from some people that the Balvar from Baush & Lomb are great scopes, so don't bother changing them.  Of course, I've heard from some the total opposite.  I'd like to once and for all either change to the Optilock, if I can, or keep with the Balvar.  Sorry for the confusion, just looking for some answers.
Thanks to all!!

I don't know, but I will make you deal on a set of Opti Locs, if they will work. I had them on a M75 .300 WM.
They are stainless.

Oh...welcome to Optics Talk.

I also have some Talley QD 30mm rings that will fit a Sako V action.

My Sako 75 wears Talley's as I prefer them to the Optilocks.

pass on the optiilocks

I have owned serveral Sakos and still have an L579 in 243 and another I inherited from my dad that is a L579 custom 22-250.

Both run standard Leupolds for Sako.

If I was to redo them I would run either Warnes or Talleys, both of which I have ran on newer Sakos.

I'm no fan of Optiloks either.

They mount the scope waaaaaaaaaayyyyyy too high (relative to the height designation they use to describe them) and they're waaaaaaaaayyyyyy too expensive for what you get. The height issues is largely due to the fact the bases are so damn thick. The screws seemed too "soft" on the ones I've had as well. I don't like the base to ring attachment method or the clamping design either, but those are personal, subjective gripes.

I do like the "ringmount" Optiloks (the 1-pc integral version that dispenses with the stupid separate bases and mount directly to the receiver dovetails), although I think they are a bit too high as well. I would have bought those rings on my earlier Sakos before I discovered better alternatives had they been available at the time. I don't understand the reasoning behind the original Optilok mount design. When you have integral tapered dovetails already milled into the receiver, why intentionally design a scope mount system that uses a separate base? The receiver dovetail IS the base; otherwise, why incorporate that feature in the first place?!!!! Just seems stupid to me.

All my Sakos except 1 have Talley rings & bases, which I've been totally happy with... even though I wish Talley also made a dedicated ringmount for Sako instead of using separate bases.

Warne used to make a ringmount for Sako, but I believe they discontinued them. I liked them o.k. They may still offer them again; I haven't checked recently.

Leupold Sako ringmounts are another good option.

The original 2-piece style Optiloks just suck!

Hey Mark, wanna buy a Rainbow vacuum? LOL.

Commenting on Ted's post, Warne did make Sako mounts but discontinued them. I had one set and the fittment was very poor. It would not hold at all. I called Warne and they said Sako kept changing final specs thus they could not make correct fitting mounts! Bummer as they now collect dust. To the OP, you can have them if you want them... maybe they will fit your Sako??? Advise if interested.

Yeah, that's what they told me as well. I had a set that fit fine, but it was made years ago.

I have several sets of Warnes for Sakos that could go to a good home that worked fine on a 75 and 85 model
