What is the difference between short, long and extended mounts? And which one would fit the 6.5x55 cal. This cal. is classed as a medium action.

The different bases are based on action length, scope tube length and eyerelief that is needed. A short scope on a long action would use the short, for example.
Another example would be using a long scope like a Leo 6.5-20 on a short action. The extended bases would be more widely spaced on the tube for stability.

The Sako reciever has tapered dovetails, getting wider as they go forward. Therefore, you need to know which action length you have so that the bases locate in the proper place on the tapers and don't sit too far forward or backward.
BTW, I'm not a fan of Optilock mounts, except for the fact the rings have the alignment inserts. I much prefer the mounts Talley offers for Sako. They are more elegant looking and don't sit so dang high. The OL bases are way too thick, and the rings are way too high.
