Hello All,

I am a new member here on the forum but a repeat customer at SWFA.  I am currently involved in a trade for a couple of rifle scopes and would value your assistance in helping me to decide between the two choices given to me.  In the trade, I was offered to choose either between a Schmidt & Bender 4x36 Hunting Scope or a Zeiss Diavari 3-9x36 scope.  I am told that the scopes are both used but in overall excellent condition.  I do not have any further information about the two rifle scopes other than I will be receiving photographs of both scopes tomorrow and can post them for all to see.  I am sure having the photographs will assist in the decision making in which scope to select.  In the meantime, let me know what you think would be the best choice?  Thanks all.  Smile

Welcome to Optics Talk, Rick.

The glass on both is exceptional, but I'd probably opt for the Zeiss since it's a variable.
What reticles are in each scope?

I've never had the chance of looking through a SB, I expect the experiance is simular to bedding down with a super model.

Me either on owning S&B scopes.  I have owned 3-9x36 Diavari's and they are very good scopes.  The choice has to be what purpose you are thinking that you need the scope for and go from there.

Welcome, Rick!

I don't know if this will make a difference in your choice or not, but the S&B 4X with the older style oval S&B logo on the top of the eyepiece housing had steel tubes rather than aluminum.  I believe it was changed to aluminum in more recent versions.  If it is the older steel version, this means if the finish is scratched off anywhere, it can rust.

In my opinion, S&B and Zeiss are comparable optically, which means they are both fantastic.

Hello All,

Thanks for all of the replies guys.  I don't know what type of reticles these scopes have and don't have any photographs of the scopes yet so I can't post them.  I was told that the Zeiss is a brand new West German model so I am wondering if it might be the version with the steel tubes that RifleDude was mentioning.  The Schmidt & Bender is also a brand new scope that was mounted with very slight ring marks on the tube.  After the Schmidt & Bender was mounted to the firearm it was not taken outdooors for use prior to being removed from the firearm.  I might end up taking the Zeiss due to the higher variable magnification over the fixed 4 power.  It is still a very tough decision due to the high reputation of both Schmidt & Bender and Zeiss scope brands.  I'll try to find out about the reticles, that might help with the decision making.  Any other replies from forum members to assist in my decision will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks all.  Big Smile

RAMBULM5, not much more to add but having hunted with both, I would say either would be fine but I'd prefer the 3-9X. Not because of the higher end but rather because I've found that when hunting in dense cover I really wanted to go below 4X. Granted, 3X is not much of a step down. I'd compare the FOV on both. If the low end of the Zeiss is appreciably larger I'd go with that and then you'd have the benefit also of the higher magnification if you needed it. Frankly, although I have the option to go up to 10X* I'd only use it on a shot greater than 300 yards.

*Although I do find the greater magnification nice for sighting in and target shooting.
