Did some monkeying around last night with my Ranch rifle. Since the stock actually determines the relationship with the receiver I figured that either changing the stock bolt torque or shimming the bedding blocks might help. I lightened up the torque to about 30in-lbs without any real change. Next I put some .003" thick aluminum duct tape on the rear V bedding blocks and bingo. The bullets headed straight into the chamber like Bill Ruger intended. Bandito

Originally the bullets nose dived into the lower chamber face. With the new stock the bullets hit above the chamber.

I was 11 when I found a roll of duct tape at a construction site. I took it home and started using it for various things with fantastic results. I thought I had found a super secret wonder tool that only highly trained construction workers could acquire, and that roll of tape was like gold to me. In fact just the other night I made a repair using duct tape. I figured it was a temporary repair, but when I went to make a more permanent repair with 3M double sided tape (another miracle tape), Mrs. BF protested, and said the duct tape worked and fit our red neck country decour.

Glad you got it figured out, that is frustrating when things don't work like they should.

Yes, but can gorillas fly? Remember hundred mile an hour tape is just green duct tape that wont stick to anything but itself.

I've got a friend that had a Ruger rifle that wouldn't group. He tried free floating, bedding, and a few other things. Then he decided the barrel needed some pressure on it. To test his theory he used a business card between the stock and barrel about an inch or two back from the end of the stock. It worked. It shrunk his groups down to around an inch. He thought about a more permanent fix but decided business cards were cheap and easily adjustable.

Thinner/lighter barrels often shoot better with some forend pressure. Many plastic stocks have small pressure pads towards the front end that can be removed if the gun doesn't like some pressure.

I have the H&R single shot 300 in a safe, didn't love it so it hasn't been out in years.  I need to sell the thing.

just curios what do you not like about it i have been thinking about a setup like that but maybe i should rethink it

Now that I've pretty resolved the feeding issues the little Ruger has been a lot of fun. I've got about 400 rounds through it now. Using it to run through old cast bullets. It's a very fun gun for plinking, but with those 110g loads it's a serious 200yd coyote rifle.

Trigger is worse than terrible, lockup is okay but sloppy. Overall fit and finish suck. It is a $300 gun, I shouldn't expect much.

I went with en AR platform, it feeds 100% and extracts/ejects 100%.

It is that, just lower expectations.  It is, as said, a $300 gun, and you get what you pay for.

They are just that. Ruger american is meant to be a affordable gun, its not a $1000 hunting rifle by no means. The stock sucks, the trigger is decent (if u remember its a $300 gun) its definitly not a Timney. But i have three americans and they all shoot moa at 100 yards. The actions are decent mine have locked up well.

If u are just looking for a cheap gun that shoots well, they are a good option. Mine 300 blk is a blast with my can. My mag holds 7 rounds even though they say 4. Hunting rabbits and yotes is a hoot.

My gunsmith was able to get my Ruger to a nice clean, crisp 2lb trigger pull without much effort.
